    Turnaround Engineer

    Job Description

    • Ensures compliance with the required HSE and technical standards while ensuring that Turnarounds meets the business needs in terms of scope, duration, timing and costs
    • The role is required to support the Turnaround Lead by effectively integrating multiple Turnaround maintenance and project work scopes into these events
    • At times serve as team leader on projects with several engineers and team members assigned
    • Assists in setting up contracts as required for more than 50 contracting companies involved in Turnarounds
    • Prepares tender scopes of work as required
    • Performs technical evaluation of material bids and services, including technical clarification to bidders through Procurement Department
    • Acts as contract owner for selected contracts
    • Performs post award contract management activities through to contract closure and look back evaluations
    • Uses different tools to validate competitiveness of schedules against peers in industry
    • Develops and challenge Turnaround worklists during the scope challenge process
    • Provides technical support for Refinery scope associated with installation, repairs and testing of equipment during pre-Turnaround and Turnaround activities
    • Reviews test procedures and compiles the necessary documentation. Updates technical data of equipment for entry into relevant system(s), e.g. SAP
    • Reviews and prepares method statements for identified major Turnaround activities
    • Perform assurance and/or cold eye reviews of contractors’ turnaround preparation packs and construction plans
    • Participate in Turnaround risk review sessions and take ownership for specific risks assigned to the Turnaround Engineer
    • Supports team in preparation for turnaround stage peer reviews
    • LPS Stewardship (Safety) when required
    • Checks and influences teams to adhere to and promote safety practices
    • Contributes to Turnaround delivery content, standards, knowledge and capabilities
    • Provides input on annual Business Plan strategies in area of responsibility.  Helps crystallize 2-3 year technology vision for area of responsibility in field of expertise making sure vision is aligned with Business Plan.
    • Participates and assists with turnaround lookback and lessons learned sessions.

    Professional Qualification and Certifications:

    • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering.  A Mechanical qualification is preferred
    • ECSA Professional Engineer and/or Project Management certification will be advantageous

    Work Experience:

    • Minimum 10 years relevant oil refining or petrochemical industry experience, including responsibilities relating to Turnaround/Shutdown events
    • Knowledge and experience with planning and executing maintenance work, refinery specifications, policies, procedures

    Knowledge and skills:

    • Experience on maintenance and turnaround management
    • Problem solving training and applied troubleshooting skills
    • Strong leadership, communication, and facilitation skills
    • Well versed in risk management principles and application, pro-active in approach
    • Experience on management of change systems and procedures
    • Disciplined scope and time management track record
    • Foundational understanding of scheduling and earned value management
    • Strong planning and organizing skills
    • Budget and cost estimation insight
    • Experience in cost benchmarking such as Solomon is preferable
    • Principles of quality management
    • Familiar with industry contracting formats and principles, e.g. NEC, FIDIC
    • Conversant with (turnaround) stage and life cycle models
    • Has good knowledge of economic drivers in local facility
