The company was founded in 1955 by a group of British cable manufacturers as African telephone Cables. Its factory and head office in Brits, was established in 1973. ATC installed the first optical fibre cable plant in Africa in 1982.

CBi electric Telecom Cables (Pty) Ltd (CBi Telecom) was formed in 2016.
The merger created a leading designer, manufacturer and supplier for both copper and optical fibre cable solutions, supplying the telecommunications, industrial and structured data communications industry. In addition synergistic connectivity services are provided including fibre ducting, splicing and training.
