    Truck Controller

    Job description

    APM Terminals has a vacancy for a Truck Controller. This is a permanent position based at their container depot in Coege IDZ, Port Elizabeth. A Truck Controller is required to control all deliveries and collections ensuring client satisfaction and the planning of activities. APM Terminals trucking division is a short-haul trucking operation whose primary activity is to transport international import and export containers. The position will report to the Operations Supervisor. Overtime and weekend work may be required. This position requires liaison with Management, Employees and Customers.

    Key Responsibilities

    • To control all deliveries and collections of empty containers.
    • Ensuring client satisfaction.
    • Planning of delivery / collection activities.
    • Ensure that all Drivers, Suppliers and clients are safe when entering the premises by introducing them to the APMT HSSE rules.

    DRIVER CONTROL

    • Plan container movements in the most effective manner for driver viability.
    • Distribute work to all drivers in a fair and equal manner.
    • Ensure that every driver carries out his instructions as given to him.
    • Ensure that every document is correctly completed by the driver.
    • Issue purchase orders for diesel and oil. Issues diesel after hours.
    • Ensure that all drivers wear the correct protective clothing.
    • Ensure that all drivers adhere to the HSSE standards of APMT while on Company premises.

    DELIVERY / DOCUMENTATION CONTROL

    • Ensure that all documents collected/returned are put into a safe place.
    • Plan for urgent deliveries for example exports (all placing/collections) urgently required full deliveries, domestic (all – placing, collections) etc.
    • Place all documents in the correct sorting shelves ensuring a smooth take over at all times.
    • Ensure that all relevant information is recorded to ensure a smooth take over.

    EMPTY CONTAINERS

    • Control the collection of empty containers from clients timeously to avoid theft of containers, demurrage / short shipment. Takes immediate action when a container cannot be located at place of delivery.
    • Notify the Risk Department and the Operations Supervisor to ensure immediate reaction in an attempt to recover goods.
    • Ensure that all information entered into the computer system is accurate.
    • Check active / inactive lists daily and keep them up to date.
    • Ensure a smooth shift change by providing the person taking over with all the information needed to operate effectively.
    • Ensure that enough drivers are available.
    • Ensure that all vehicles are accounted for and safe before closing the office, and ensure that the daily statistics are done, that all completed documents are sorted.
    • Ensure that all documents for full deliveries are locked in a safe place.
    • Ensure that all trailers and containers are removed from the street.
    • Confirm all special arrangements in writing.
    • Visit clients to promote closer contact and a better understanding.
    • Ensure that all faxes, information are sent to the various clients for containers outstanding for 24 hours and longer daily.
    • Ensure that before issuing a driver with a container to deliver, that the vehicle is capable to carry the size and weight.

    CLIENT COMMUNICATION SATISFACTION

    • Plan container movements in the most effective manner to ensure client satisfaction.
    • Note all enquiries / instructions from clients in the controller’s book - to ensure that when shifts change, the client does not suffer.
    • Liaise closely with all clients / Agents to maintain the Company’s high standard of service.
    • Is friendly / helpful to all clients by taking responsibility for and solving their transport problems.
    • Advise Agents immediately of all futile trips and / or any additional costs incurred.
    • Follow instructions stipulated on documents received telephonically / fax.
    • Confirm all special arrangements in writing.

    TRAILER CONTROL

    • Control the movement of the trailers.
    • Ensure that the active / inactive lists of trailers are updated before ending off shifts.
    • Ensure that all trailers are accounted for at all times for security purposes.
    • Ensure that any faults on the trailer systems are reported immediately for rectifications.

    APMT SAFETY REGULATIONS

    • Ensure that everybody on the premises is compliant and is wearing the correct PPE.
    • Ensure that an induction course is completed with any new person on the premises.
    • Ensure that everybody on the premises adheres to the HSSE rules.
    • Report immediately to the Safety Representative or Branch Manager when a person does not adhere to the rules.

    Who we are looking for

    Critical Qualifications/Skills/Experience

    • Senior Certificate (Grade 12)
    • Tertiary qualification will be an advantage
    • Code 08 Drivers license
    • Accurate and attention to detail
    • Good organizing / planning skills
    • Work in pressurized environment and towards tight deadlines
    • Shift worker
    • Well-spoken and can interact well with a variety of different cultures
    • 2 – 3 years’ experience in the operations of trucking

    Southern Africa HSSE Advisor

    Job description

    APM Terminals South Africa Inland Services (SAF) currently has a vacancy for a HSSE Advisor to support the business from a hands-on operational perspective in respect of HSSE. This position assists in the development and delivery of the company’s Health, Safety, Security and Environmental APMT Global Standards to provide for a safe and secure business operation.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Assists in the development and delivery of the company’s Health, Safety, Security and Environmental functions.
    • Assist in the implementation of HSSE policies, procedures and systems to provide for a safe and secure business operation.
    • Provide support to the South African entities to ensure that relevant safety legislation and the provisions of the relevant South African Occupational Health and Safety Act are met.
    • Provide support to the South African entities to ensure compliance to other South African Health & Safety legislation requirements are met. Including, but not limited to, driven machineries regulations, electrical regulations, hazardous chemical substance regulations, noise induced hearing loss regulations, environmental regulations, facilities regulations, electrical installation general safety regulations, general administration regulations, vessels under pressure regulations, electrical machinery regulations.
    • Provide support to the Namibian entity to ensure that relevant safety legislation as set out in the Division of Occupational Health and Safety of the Ministry of Labour are met.
    • Contribute to the continuous improvement process and to the meeting of business objectives. This includes providing suggestions and input to changes and improvements in safety systems.
    • Represents the HSSE department in order to ensure a mutual understanding of the Company’s goals and requirements, and to work in a co-operative partnership with local resources.
    • Support the HSSE function in the development of goals, strategies, and plans needed to achieve the HSSE strategy and build the capabilities to enable optimal delivery with input from relevant stakeholders more specifically operations.
    • Maintains up-to-date information and knowledge on new developments in the area of Safety, Health, Environment, and Security.
    • Coach and support operational and management teams in HSSE matters and operational compliance.
    • Engage and motivate operational team.
    • Identify ways to fine tune HSSE processes and systems in line with changing work practices.
    • Supports the entities to ensure that environmental best practices are in place, including waste management processes and environmental impact mitigations.
    • Co-ordinate and manage escalated incidents and problems that occur after hours.
    • Supports entities in development and maintenance of safety files and records.
    • Support in the development, monitoring and review of entire risk assessment process (assist operational teams with identifying hazards that could cause harm, support in the development and implementation of control measures to reduce risk exposure).
    • Support operations in the implementation and revision of SOPs.
    • Manages the SAF safety projects through the APM Terminals Project Management System.
    • Manages the sharing of learnings from High Potential Incidents and the implementation of these through the APM Terminals Project Management System.
    • Assists in the investigation of near miss events and incidents and cooperates in the preparation of material and evidence for organisation in hearings, lawsuits and insurance investigations. *Assists in the preparation of HSSE alerts and shared learning packs and timely communication of these to the HSSE Manager.
    • Inspects organisation facilities to detect existing or potential incident and health hazards, determines corrective or preventative measures where indicated, and follows up to ensure measures have been implemented.
    • Assist HSSE function in the overall HSSE Fatal Audits program, including carrying out the audits and development of audit reports.
    • Support entities in the implementation of actions identified and captured in the audit report.
    • Track, manage and support the implementation of standards from the company’s safety compliance program (Fatal 5)
    • Compile and manage HSSE actions (from incidents, shared learnings, inspections, audits, compliance programs) through the company’s HSSE reporting tool.
