    Investment Associate X2

    Job description

    Deal execution:

    • Ensure deal structuring and pricing in line with NEF’s product criteria and mandate. Ensure accurate capturing of terms on the standard NEF Template. 
    • Conduct due diligence on approved deals in line with guidelines and covering all the potential risks (including those raised by FMD committee) as well as mitigating factors. 
    • Develop financial model on due diligence outcomes. 
    • Negotiate terms and conditions of investment to minimize risk in each transaction. 
    • Ensure shareholders / investment agreements are reviewed for input by legal. 
    • Prepare and present investment report to FMD and investment committees within pre-agreed timelines. 
    • Ensure that screening papers and IC papers are reviewed for accuracy and quality assurance prior to submission to Fund Manager and/or external circulation. 
    • Ensure that all disbursement files are reviewed for completeness prior to release to Fund Manager. 
    • Work with a Senior Investment Associate, Fund Manager and the rest of iMbewu leadership to ensure high quality transactions and superior client service. 
    • Manage and ensure all stakeholders are in agreement and that the relevant documents are signed prior to disbursement. 

    Risk Management:

    • Ensure portfolio growth and management through number and value of deals. 
    • Minimize impairments and maximise collections to ensure portfolio sustainability. 
    • Risk Management thorough conducting quality due diligence processes. 

    Customer Service & Ad Hoc Tasks

    • Ensure high level of service to clients when executing deals. 
    • Ensure that clients are regularly kept abreast of the progress on their applications. 
    • Promptly respond to any queries from clients regarding their applications in the pipeline. 
    • Promptly follow up on leads forwarded by Fund Manager, Divisional Executive, CEO, other managers and from third parties.

    Minimum requirements

    Qualification Requirements

    • Bachelor’s degree with specialisation in Structured Finance and/or Business Finance 
    • CFA added advantage

    Experience / Skills Required

    • Minimum of 3 years deal execution experience 
    • Strong deal making experience and ability to structure deals, financial modelling and negotiating skills. 
    • PC Literacy and competency in Excel spreadsheet, MS Word and MS PowerPoint. 
    • Understand NEF mandate and investment guidelines. 
    • Possess good analytical and modelling skills and be able to apply NEF’s financial modelling methodologies. 

    In-depth experience in conducting quality due diligence exercises: 

    • Accounting and/or auditing, law, tax; o Able to gather data from all relevant sources, including industry experts; 
    • Able to communicate at all levels and use interviews to gather data necessary in compiling investment reports; 
    • Great writing skills; 
    • Able to identify risks and recommend relevant risk mitigation measures; 
    • Understand various investment instruments and able to structure deals and to apply them in relevant investment circumstances. 
    • Communication and presentation skills to present investment reports to various committees for approval.

    Job description

    Assessment of Applications (Pre-screening) and Report writing

    • Collect all relevant information from applicants; 
    • Evaluate new deals from Pre-Investment for potential; 
    • Perform high level desktop financial and commercial assessment and provide recommendations and comments to Investment Associates; 
    • Analyse, compile and report on market information on a deal-by-deal basis; 
    • Prepare the early review report and make recommendation for ratification by deal committee within guidelines; 
    • Draft recommendation letters. 

    Financial modeling and preparing of financial analysis

    • Build financial models according to NEF financial modeling methodologies standards models; 
    • Provide comprehensive financial analysis, using approved financial modelling tools, to the Deal Team on transactions presented to the NEF; 
    • Apply standard investment analysis (under the advice / assistance of senior team members) on deal structuring techniques, market analysis and valuation principles; 
    • Manage and influence internal decision–making and project process to obtain investment approval; 

    Research, analysis and preparing research reports

    • Assist teams with due diligence exercise; 
    • Analyse and prepare reports on findings and make recommendations.

    Minimum requirements

    Experience / Skills Required

    • Minimum of 2 years similar experience in the corporate finance/ Banking / DFI environment 
    • At least 2 years financial modelling and deal assessment experience 
    • A generalist in small and medium enterprises (SMEs), franchise, procurement and entrepreneurship finance area 
    • Understanding of NEF mandate and investment guidelines 
    • Possess good analytical and modelling skills 
    • An expert analyst demonstrating high command of the abilities required to perform the role 
    • Ability to apply financial modelling methodologies 
    • Ability to apply NEF processes with ability to move beyond the standard process with help to produce highly insightful diagnoses 
    • Able to identify important issues and highlight same to team for consideration 
    • Good at knowledge gathering finds additional relevant information from unusual sources 
    • Possesses analytical skills 
    • Can develop good, actionable recommendations and is a strong contributor in discussions on investment implications

    Job description

    Research, analysis and preparing research reports

    • Conduct research and gather data using reliable sources of information. 
    • Analyse and prepare reports on findings and make recommendations. 
    • Contribute to the development of a business development strategy when required for the portfolio companies; 
    • Develop a broad knowledge (of corporate finance / private equity macro environment, sector, specific transaction) to support team in identifying and recommending appropriate mitigation measures on key risk issues for portfolio companies; 

    Report Writing

    • Evaluation of new deals from Pre-Investment for potential investment and prepare the early review report or decline within. 
    • Perform desktop financial and commercial assessment and provide recommendations and comments to Investment Associates. 
    • Analyse, compile and report on market information on a deal-by-deal basis; 

    Financial modelling and preparing of financial analysis

    • Building financial models according to NEF financial modelling methodologies standard models 
    • Provide comprehensive financial analysis through the use of approved financial modelling for existing portfolio companies; 
    • Analysing financial information relating to specific companies, e.g. company results, profit and loss,
      balance sheet and cash flow statements to determine the commercial viability of portfolio companies;
    • Consider the economic implications which might affect the performance of portfolio companies; 
    • For additional funding and or restructure, partake in due diligence exercises at the request of the team member, using approved processes and principles as outlined in the due diligence scope; 
    • Provide commentary on innovative / optimum / appropriate finance and legal structures for each investment deal ensuring long term sustainability / viability of the project to the benefit of the client and the NEF; 
    • Analysing equity valuations of portfolio companies semi-annually; 
    • Annual site visits to investee portfolio companies; 
    • Early identification / flagging of potential areas of defaulting clients.
