    Research Study Coordinator

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Post Graduate qualification in a Health or Social Science discipline.
    • Must possess a valid South African Code B Driver’s License and own vehicle.

    Minimum Experience

    • Minimum of 2- 3 years’ experience in a clinical research setting of which 2 years’ experience should be coordinating research studies.

    Enrolled Nurse

    Description

    The purpose of this role is for the Enrolled Nurse to be primarily responsible for recruiting, screening, consenting, enrolling of research study participants, sample collection and blood draws. The Enrolled Nurse will be expected to follow procedures according to study protocols and to provide high quality clinical care to participants and other clients as appropriate in support of AHRI’s scientific agenda.

    Requirements

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Current registration with SANC.
    • Valid driver’s License and own vehicle.
    • Fluency in English and IsiZulu.
    • Phlebotomy Certificate (added advantage).
    • Good Clinical Practice (GCP) certification (added advantage)

    Minimum Experience

    • Knowledge of and experience in HIV & TB treatment and care.
    • Previous clinical research experience e.g., working in a clinical research project.
    • Clinical research experience (added advantage)

    Postdoctoral Epidemiologist/Biostatistician/Geographer

    • This two-year postdoctoral position in Professor Tanser and Professor Mwambi’s research group is embedded in a recently awarded National Institute Health R01 grant. The project seeks to develop the next-generation HIV-prevention strategies for poor rural communities in sub-Saharan Africa. The project will: 1) Quantify the shifts in the spatial, temporal and demographic burden of HIV incidence and underlying viral load patterns in a full population cohort in rural South Africa; 2)Harness the changes in the dynamics of the HIV epidemic to design future intervention programs which will maximize HIV incidence reduction based on the dynamic needs of the most vulnerable sub-populations.
    • The successful candidates will have access to one of the largest ongoing population-based HIV cohorts in the world - the Africa Health Research Institute’s population cohort in rural KwaZulu-Natal, which includes over 90,000 individuals, with individual-level sociodemographic, biological, and clinical record data as well as comprehensive genomics data. Successful candidates will receive a generous tax-free stipend. Once appointed, the successful candidates will be supported to apply for externally funded personal fellowships and grants and develop collaborations/skills for their career development. They will receive mentorship from leading scientists and faculty members in AHRI, who commonly publish in some of the top journals in the field (Science, Nature and Lancet).
    • Candidates will be based at our state-of-the-art campuses in KwaZulu-Natal which are located in Durban and Somkhele respectively.

    The minimum qualifications and experience required for these research posts are:

    • PhD in Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Bioinformatics, Econometrics, Mathematical Modelling, Spatial Analytics or a closely related quantitative field
    • Several high-quality publications as a first author
    • Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team

    Post-Doctoral Research Fellow

    Description

    • This position is based in the AHRI Durban site laboratory of Henrik Kloverpris through NIH grants, with an initial 24-month term and the potential for extension. You will be responsible for contributing to experimental design, training and overseeing students, and supporting more junior members of the lab. A proven track record of published papers in international peer-reviewed journals, good written and oral communication skills, and the ability to work collaboratively as part of a team are also essential.
    • The fellow will be a member of the Kloverpris Group and will have the opportunity to work with large numbers of gut mucosa samples from both clinical indicated and research elected participants. Moreover, you will also have the opportunity to work on unique clinical resected gastrointestinal (GI) associated lymph nodes, liver resections and other tissue sites
    • Our cutting-edge research focuses on immune responses to HIV infection, with a particular emphasis on immune cells involved in the regulation of gut intestinal immunity. We are focused on gaining a better understanding of immune responses located in human tissue that are directly related to HIV disease pathology. By studying tissue samples from research elected non-diseased participants with and without HIV infection in a comprehensively controlled sampling, we aim to guide additional novel treatment strategies to restore tissue homeostasis and immune health.

    Minimum Qualifications

    • PhD degree in immunology, virology, biochemistry or related or related fields.

    Minimum Experience

    • Experience in flow cytometry and flow cytometry data analysis, clinical samples and human primary cells, and be proficient in preparing results and draft manuscripts for publication.
    • Detailed knowledge of the procedures relevant to the work will be an added advantage.
    • Experience or willingness to learn skills in analyzing large Next-Generation sequencing data.
    • A proven track record of published papers in international peer-reviewed journals, good written and oral communication skills, and the ability to work collaboratively as part of a team are also essential.

    Senior Social Science Research Assistant

    Description

    • The desired incumbent will provide high level assistance to the junior and senior social scientists through involvement and contribution to developing coding frames, conducting rudimentary coding. The role will also include data collection, developing descriptive labels or codes of data to begin the initial steps of analysis and writing up a narrative report of the study findings. The position will be based in our Durban site.

    Requirements

    • Honours Degree qualification in Social Science. Having a master’s degree is an added advantage
    • Must have a valid driver’s licence and have passed the AHRI driving test.
    • 2 years’ relevant experience in qualitative data collection
    • Experience of developing coding frames and writing up study findings
    • Basic knowledge of qualitative data analysis

    Research Admin Assistant

    Description

    • The Research Administrative Assistant provides administrative and secretarial support for the WHO Problem Management for Adolescents Living with HIV programme team. The incumbent will also assist in the coordination of meetings, organizing, and preparing for training that will be conducted by the project or external facilitators. The administrative assistant will support the Programme team with all operational day-to-day activities and where necessary scientific documentation. The incumbent will be required to be mostly office-based in Somkhele, but not limited to assistance with project needs or tasks that are field-based and Durban based.

    Overview of Duties

    • Coordinate administrative tasks for research operations
    • Work with postdoc and Social Science department to develop and implement an inventory for standard operating procedures (SOPs)
    • Maintain and control programme assets and assets lists
    • Maintain and file all programme records
    • Initiate and manage all purchases including requisition, delivery and payment procedures.
    • Management of assets and consumables through receiving, handling, storing, and issuing stock
    • Provide secretarial services for meetings and trainings
    • Perform other office-based research coordination and administration duties and tasks as required
    • Assist the PI, postdoc and research team on the project with operational aspects of fieldwork related activities

    Requirements

    • A degree or Diploma in research or business administration or relevant field
    • 2 years related experience in a similar role within research environment
    • Experience in an administrative position, similar role, or any previous administrative assistant position(s)
