Description

Reporting to the Space Intelligence Services Manager, the Remote Sensing Scientist will be responsible for researching applications and potential remote sensing technology for image processing applications in specific focus areas. They will be required to develop value-added products as derived from satellite images.

Key performance areas will include, but are not limited to:

• Scientific and Applied Research.
• Stakeholder Relations.
• User Requirements and Proposal Writing.
• Project Management and Coordination to deliver Solutions and Services to User Community.
• Value-Added Product Development.
• Community Enablement.

Requirements

The ideal candidate must have the following qualifications and experience:

• MSc in Remote Sensing/GIS/Environmental Science/Geoinformatics or Natural Sciences with a strong mathematical, GIS, remote sensing, and programming background is required.
• A minimum of 3-5 years of working experience as a Remote Sensing Scientist or Researcher developing remote sensing applications for human settlements, forests, agriculture, mining, or urban landscapes.
• High competence in processing and retrieving geophysical and biophysical parameters from satellite imagery.
• Competence in geospatial programming and shell scripting and Python, R, or C++.
• Experience in using open-source remote sensing and GIS software and geo-databases is required.

Reporting to the Space Education Specialist, the Space Education Officer, is required to create awareness regarding the existence, benefits, and value of space science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) to educational institutions and students. They provide support in gaining funding, and grants to promote and grow the awareness of SANSA.

Key performance areas will include, but are not limited to:

• Public outreach and space awareness raising.
• Space Outreach and Education.
• Stakeholder Engagement and Administration.

Requirements

The ideal candidate must have the following qualifications and experience:

• A Bachelor’s degree in Space Science, Astronomy, Education, Science Communication, or a related field.
• A minimum of 3 years’ experience as a trainer/ educator in a scientific institution.
• A valid driver’s license.
• Demonstrated experience in educational program development and delivery, particularly in space science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
• Knowledge of space science concepts and the ability to communicate them effectively to diverse audiences.
• Excellent organisational and project management skills.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
• Proficiency in using digital tools and social media for educational purposes.
• Creative and innovative thinking with strong problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Experience working with diverse communities and underrepresented groups in STEM.
• Familiarity with informal education settings such as planetariums, science centres, or museums.
• Background in creating multimedia educational content.

This role aims to inspire and educate various audiences about space exploration, technology, and the universe. It involves creating engaging content, organising events, and collaborating with educators and scientists to promote space education to diverse audiences. It is responsible for developing, coordinating, and implementing science outreach programs and activities.
