    JNR Product Developer Intern

    Job Purpose:

    • The Junior Product Developer plays a crucial support role in the product development process, assisting the Product Developer in managing the product development of new furniture and homeware products from initial design approval through to delivery of product. This position involves communication with local and international suppliers, ensure timely sampling and costing, and maintain up-to-date documentation. The Junior Product Developer will aid in the preparation of technical specifications, technical drawings and assembly instructions. By ensuring accuracy and efficiency in all product-related tasks, this role contributes to the successful execution of new product initiatives.

    Main accountabilities:

    • Assist the Product Developer with collating Briefs for local and international suppliers on new product designs for development once the designs are approved.
    • Following up on sampling and costing to ensure internal deadlines are met by suppliers.
    • With the help of suppliers, assist with putting together assembly instructions where needed as part of spec briefs.
    • Ensure the filing system is kept up to date on all product development designs/briefs and signed off specs.
    • Prepare and update spec sheets outlining all product information on each new product for signoff by supplier and buyer – cross checking for accuracy.
    • Work closely with the Product Developer to assist in ensuring all new product information is relayed timeously to ensure a successful product launch.
    • Assist the product developer in putting together technical drawings for New Product briefs.
    • Facilitate communication between suppliers and internal teams to streamline feedback and resolve any issues.
    • Prepare additional documentation such as presentations for internal meetings or supplier briefings as needed.
    • Help evaluate prototypes and samples, providing feedback on design, functionality, and materials.
    • Help coordinate with production teams to ensure manufacturing processes align with product specifications.

    Technical Skills:

    • A 3-year diploma in drafting, industrial design
    • Technical knowledge of design software e.g. AutoCAD, Fusion.
    • A minimum of 1-2 years working experience in product development, project coordination or design.
    • He or she will demonstrate a passion for materials, furniture construction and design; will be creative & passionate about the Weylandts brand, eager to use their skills to maximise the brand look and sales potential. Comprehensive Microsoft office skills are required.
    • This person is well organized and able to juggle multiple projects in at a time.
    • This role will require a driver’s license and own reliable transport.

    VM and Spatial Planner Assistant

    Role purpose

    • The VM and Spatial Planner Assistant supports the Spatial Planner with the planning, documentation and implementation of homeware products within store settings.
    • The role assists in translating concepts developed by the Chief Brand Officer into clear and practical visual merchandising guidelines. A key focus is helping stores understand how key new and existing homeware products should be styled, grouped and integrated into furniture settings, particularly during the company’s twice-yearly store revamps.

    Key responsibilities

    Homeware lookbooks

    • Assist with the preparation and compilation of homeware visual merchandising lookbooks.
    • Gather and organize the product information, imagery, layouts and styling references required for each lookbook.
    • Document how homeware products should be grouped, styled and implemented within store settings.
    • Check lookbooks for accuracy and consistency before they are shared with stores.
    • Communicate lookbooks and related implementation requirements to relevant store teams.
    • Maintain an organized library of current lookbooks and supporting material.

    Store revamps and product integration

    • Support the Spatial Planner in preparing for the company’s twice-yearly store revamps.
    • Assist with incorporating new homeware ranges into furniture settings and store layouts.
    • Help translate the Chief Brand Officer’s concepts into practical in-store applications.
    • Use Revit to assist with layouts, product placement and spatial-planning documentation.
    • Help ensure that each setting is allocated the correct homeware products and stock.
    • Track changes, product requirements and outstanding information during the planning process.
    • Identify potential product, layout or implementation issues and raise them with the Spatial Planner.

    General support

    • Assist with the ongoing presentation of homeware products across store settings.
    • Support communication between the buying team, stores and other relevant stakeholders.
    • Maintain accurate product, layout and visual merchandising documentation.
    • Provide general visual merchandising and spatial-planning assistance as required.

    Candidate profile

    • This is a junior role suited to a recent graduate with a strong visual eye and an interest in homeware, interiors and retail. The ideal candidate will combine creative thinking with attention to detail and be comfortable working across both design and coordination tasks.

    Requirements

    • A relevant qualification in Interior Design, Interior Architecture, Spatial Design or a related field.
    • Proficiency in Revit is essential.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly PowerPoint, Excel and Word.
    • Strong visual awareness and an understanding of colour, scale, styling and product coordination.
    • Good organisational and attention-to-detail skills.
    • Clear written and verbal communication skills.
    • The ability to work collaboratively, manage deadlines and adapt to changing requirements
    • Experience in retail, visual merchandising or homeware would be advantageous but is not essential.
