    Senior Data Scientist

    Requirements for the job:

    • NQF Level 7 (e.g. Bachelor’s Degree or Advanced Diploma) in Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Science, process engineering or a related field.
    • At least 5 years’ professional experience in systems engineering, data product development, or similar role.
    • Ability to design, develop, and maintain interactive dashboards (e.g., Power BI, Tableau, Google Looker
    • Studio, open-source platforms) for diverse user groups.
    • Strong software engineering and programming skills, with the ability to develop automated pipelines and scalable solutions.

    Programme Lead d-School Afrika

    REQUIREMENTS:

    • NQF7 level (Undergraduate degree/Advanced diploma).
    • At least 5 years design thinking coaching experience with proven knowledge of design thinking. 
    • Proven experience of programme management, administration, people and stakeholder co-ordination and organising skills with reference to teamwork and co-creation.
    • Proven excellence in computer literacy, including essential knowledge and proficiency of common PC applications and online platforms like MS Office, Zoom and online whiteboard platforms e.g. Miro, Mural etc.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication with attention to detail and good presentation skills.
    • Ability to problem-solve and apply analytical thinking.
    • Ability to be a self-starter and manage project work with minimal supervision in a rapidly changing, constantly evolving setting.
    • Some experience of working with budgets

    ADVANTAGEOUS:

    • Proven experience in an innovation environment, in start-ups and/or teaching at a university or practical experience as a design thinking coach in a corporate context.
    • Previous experience in the management and leading of d-school programmes.
    • Learning design and teaching experience.
    • Research skills.
    • Experience in using Learning Management Systems platforms

    RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE BUT NOT LIMITED TO:

    • Programme planning and development - Conceptualise and plan the Foundation and other core d-school programmes (DT Week, DTinAfrika, DTiP) in cooperation with the d-school team and/ or external partners.
    • Programme coordination, delivery, management and administration - Plan, implement, lead and coordinate various design thinking programmes specifically the Foundation programme, DT Week and DTinAfrika and DTiP programmes.
    • Management and coordination of programme coaches - Coordinate and manage coaches for programmes delivered as well as supporting the continuous content and professional development of coaches.
    • Programme relationship management - Responsible for the liaison and coordination of chosen project partners involved in the Foundation programme, DT Week and DTinAfrika and DTiP programmes.
    • Programme financial management and administration - Allocation of budget to programme activities, oversee monitoring and reconciliation of programme expenditure vs budgets and report as and when required.

    Head: Newsroom & Publications

    EQUIREMENTS FOR THE JOB:

    • An appropriate NQF 7 or higher tertiary qualification preferably in journalism, media studies, communication sciences or related field
    • Five or more years of experience in communications, publications, or newsroom environments, of which at least three years must be at a senior level.
    • Experience must have been in an editorial capacity either as a copy editor, sub-editor, editor or a writer
    • Demonstrated effective communication skills and sound managerial capability

    IT IS ADVANTAGEOUS TO HAVE KNOWLEDGE OF:

    • Current editorial conventions and practices.
    • Current South African media landscape.
    • The higher education sector.
    • South African Press practices, especially relating to republishing content, use of images and photographs [including those relating to minors], permissions for reuse of external content.
    • Online publishing conventions [both local and international]

    RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE BUT NOT LIMITED TO:

    • Manage and drive key editorial projects, publications and other content generated by the unit from conceptualisation to completion.
    • Manage the overall running of the newsroom and work closely with the senior writer in mentoring junior writers.
    • Ensure that written and audio-visual content published on all platforms is not in contravention of copyright laws and other laws relating to the protection of people’s dignity; as well as rights enshrined in the South African Constitution.
    • Ensure that journalistic ethics and high standards of accuracy and professionalism are maintained at all times.
    • Ensure that UCT News and Publications are in alignment with the UCT vision and CMD’s overall strategy, making output much more visible, accessible and relevant.
    • Work closely with other managers within CMD and the wider UCT community to ensure that online news seamlessly integrates across all websites, and a variety of multimedia and social media platforms while maintaining tone, accuracy and brand consistency.

    Chief Research Oficer: Data Advocacy (16-month contract)

    Requirements for the job:

    • PhD in a discipline of relevance to urban data.
    • A minimum of five years relevant work experience in research or policy work related to urban data.
    • Extensive knowledge of the collection and analysis of quantitative urban data, especially national censuses and national household surveys, and understanding of and ability to communicate stories about the impact data usage has on the public sector.
    • Good knowledge of urban issues in Africa.
    • Evidence of academic writing ability.
    • A strong understanding of qualitative and quantitative research methods, and the ability to work with, and understand, complex datasets.
    • Excellent verbal, written and presentation skills.
    • Extensive familiarity with government stakeholders in Africa, and ability to develop, manage, and thrive in relationships with public sector executives and senior staffers.
    • Familiarity with presenting complex quantitative and qualitative research and analytical findings.
    • Computer literacy: experience with Microsoft Office, G Suite, and project management applications.

    The following would be advantageous:

    • Knowledge of how to create data visualizations in, for example, RStudio or Tableau.
    • Skills in website development/maintenance and the use of data management / analysis and statistical software (such as GIS and SPSS).
    • Fluency in French.
