    Equipment Controller Pecker Dr

    Description

    • The Equipment Controller Pecker Driver is responsible for breaking excess slag on the ladle pots using the slag breaking machines. 
    • Ensure the pecker machine is in good working condition
    • Responsible for the slag breaking process using the TML
    • Complete TML pre-checks at the beginning of shift
    • Need to manage delays & assist maintenance where needed. (Transportation of equipment and spares)
    • Employ a systematic approach to achieving objectives/KPI

    • Minimum National Senior Certificate/Metals Production NQF 4. with Math’s and Science.  
    • Successfully completed the LSM program.

    Artisan Diesel Mechanic Fleet - Grade 10/09

    Main duties and responsibilities

    • Preventative Maintenance: Attend to job cards and statutory schedules to service machinery and equipment according to maintenance philosophies and OSH Act standards.
    • Breakdown Maintenance: Perform ad-hoc repairs, fault finding, and diagnostic procedures using correct PPE and tools to minimize downtime.
    • Safety Management: Adhere strictly to OHS & E Act, follow lock-out procedures, and participate in daily safety discussions and monthly meetings.
    • Work Area & Equipment Care: Maintain a clean work area and service LDV; ensure all tools are cleaned, maintained, and properly stored.
    • Documentation & Reporting: Complete job cards and permits accurately; report deviations or concerns to the Team Manager.
    • Training & Support: Assist apprentice learners with logbook requirements and follow a personal development plan.

    Requirements

    Experience: 

    • Minimum (2 years) / Ideal (5 years): Experience with Earth Moving Machinery, including stationary and mobile equipment.
    • Minimum (2 years) / Ideal (3 years): Experience in Mechanical repairs (gearboxes, brakes, drives), Hydraulics (fault finding and system maintenance), and Pneumatics.
    • Minimum (2 years) / Ideal (3 years): Basic rigging, arc welding, gas cutting, and assembly/installation of machinery.

    Primary Qualifications: 

    • Minimum: Trade Relevant N3, Technical Matric, or NCV L4 with Maths and Science (Grade 10).
    • Ideal: Trade Relevant N3/Technical Matric/NCV L4 with Maths and Science plus Auto Electrical training (Grade 09).
    • Certification: Diesel Mechanic Trade Test (NQF Level 4).

    Licenses Required:

    • Code 8 Driver’s License.
    • Pendant Control Cranes and Jib hoist cranes license.
    • Forklift and TML/Kress licenses for testing purposes.

    Knowledge & Special Training:

    • In-depth understanding of Auto Electrical, Mechanical, Hydraulics, and Pneumatics.
    • Familiarity with Caterpillar (SIS/ET), VIP, and People Soft systems.
    • Basic computer skills (Gmail, Excel, Word) for ordering spares and reporting.

    Maintenance Shift Manager

    Key Responsibilities:

    The Maintenance Shift Manager has the responsibility for Maintenance on a shift basis.

    • Manage all Engineering first-line maintenance and repairs on shift.
    • Oversee emergency repairs and routine preventative maintenance tasks.
    •  Ensure all work is performed in compliance with safety regulations and company policies.
    • Troubleshoot complex mechanical and electrical issues as they arise.
    • Allocate resources based on the magnitude and criticality of problems and the availability    of skilled personnel.
    • Liaise with various Production Team Managers to confirm the urgency of required work.
    • Prioritize actions and resources according to line and production priorities.

     Breakdown Management & Response:

    • Prioritize and attend to all breakdowns, with a primary focus on Category “A” lines and major equipment failures.
    • Serve as the primary lead on repairs to ensure they are completed as efficiently and safely as possible.
    • Conduct workstation visits to consult with Production Shift Managers, Team Managers, and operators regarding problem areas.

     Resource Coordination:

    • Exercise the authority to call in extra resources, including standby teams, outside contractors, or personnel from other sections to minimize downtime.
    • Manage the procurement of spares and coordinate repairs from outside suppliers until a Team Manager takes charge of a specific incident.
    • During extended downtime, develop work lists for affected areas and reallocate resources to perform opportunistic maintenance.

    Investigation & Reporting:

    • Perform thorough investigations into equipment failures to establish root causes.
    • Gather technical information and provide detailed feedback and documentation on all incidents.

    Safety & Compliance:

    • Ensure strict adherence to all safety regulations and protocols during breakdown repairs and general maintenance activities.
    • Conduct regular safety and toolbox talks with the maintenance team.

    Operational Leadership & Communication:

    • Maintain constant communication with Production Shift Managers to make high-level decisions regarding the starting and stopping of plant units.
    • Lead detailed pre-shift meetings with unit millwrights to discuss plant status, previous shift issues, and shift coverage.
    • The separate unit’s millwrights reports functionally to him, he will have detailed pre-shift meetings with them and ensure proper shift coverage.

    Requirements

    Qualifications:

    • Proven experience in a maintenance leadership or supervisory role.
    • Strong technical knowledge of hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical systems, drives and cranes.
    • Excellent problem-solving and communication skills.
    • Ability to work flexible shift patterns.
    • Steel plant experience will be an advantage.
    • A minimum qualification of N3 + plus trade (Millwright or Instrumentation) with 10 yrs  experience
    • Preferably N6 and relevant trade (Millwright or Instrumentation) with 5 Years relevant engineering experience
