    Financial Compliance Specialist

    The Role 

    Reporting to and supporting the Copper Africa Financial Controller, this role is responsible for support in executing all activities and deliverables within the Financial Compliance function for Copper Africa.  General activities include oversight, review and support financial Compliance governance, risk management and control implementation across the applicable finance functions in the Copper Africa region (For operating and corporates entities, including operational and commercial risk management). The incumbent in this role further supports the financial Compliance reporting in the review, develop and implement of best practice policies and controls to establish a robust control environment governing finance and related functions providing guidance to and support to finance teams and the implementation of the Copper Africa Finance operating model and objectives.
     
    The Responsibilities

    • Primary responsibility to support the Compliance Controllers in executing their responsibilities around financial governance, risk management and control implementation across the applicable finance functions in the Copper Africa region (For operating and corporates entities, including operational and commercial risk management)
    • Review, develop and implement best practice policies and controls to establish a robust control environment governing finance and related functions
    • Review and maintenance of Risk and Control Matrixes (RACM) in line with UKCR requirements, including training, reporting and recommendations on relevant controls
    • Develop and maintain regional risk register
    • Support regional risk assessment for all relevant processes, including review and implementation of control measures and alignment with Global requirements
    • Perform system reviews of relevant DOA’s in line with Global policies, regional requirements and organisational design, including access reviews
    • Support the development and implementation of a regional document control policy (through new or existing applications and systems), including but not limited to access to policies and procedures, document retention, statutory filings, historical information, etc.
    • Coordinate a regional training program around UKCR risk and controls to ensure compliance and awareness of relevant business controls
    • Support internal- and external audit queries, escalations and discussions around UKCR controls testing
    • Provide guidance to- and support finance teams to execute on their accountabilities
    • Support implementation of Copper Africa Finance operating model and objectives 

    Experience & qualifications: 

    • Post-Graduate Degree in Commerce of Accounting
    • CA(SA) 3 to 5 years’ relevant post-article work experience, preferably in the mining/natural resources industry
    • Prior exposure to Compliance, SOX (or similar control environment), Reporting, Planning, Operational finance and support services functions
    • Demonstrated prior SOX exposure in a robust control environment
    • Prior SAP and/or Oracle experience beneficial
    • Proficient computer literacy including Microsoft office
    • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, with both verbal and written communication skills
    • Technical knowledge of accounting principles and robust control environment

    Project Study Manager

    The Role

    This position reports to the Project Director / Senior Project Manager/ Head of Projects Regional and is responsible for leading the project development team through the PFS stage to ensure that project objectives and value are defined and delivered.

    This is a permanent position based in Johannesburg South Africa, with regular travel to the DRC. 

    Responsibilities

    • The Study Manager is accountable to the Project Director for the delivery of Pre-feasibility Study (PFS) including the study report, project controls, the project valuation, and the management of the study’s workstreams including, but not limited to, water management, waste management, geotechnical work, infrastructure and services, engineering approvals, the feasibility study plan, and the project execution plan. The Study Manager is accountable for the quality of the PFS deliverables and ensuring that all applicable guidelines and standards are met or exceeded.
    • Develop the Project Scope by understanding the Copper Asset business drivers and integrating these into a meaningful plan. 
    • Maintain continuous alignment of project scope with business objectives and making recommendations to modify the project to enhance effectiveness in achieving business results or strategic intent.  
    • Influence decisions based on understanding of the strategy and commercial drivers and contributing to the implementation strategy within the project.
    • Guide the internal approval process through the technical and business evaluation process to achieve the required outcomes.
    • Implement the project in accordance with approved parameters (e.g. HSE, scope, quality, budget, schedule, etc.) to deliver an operating asset.
    • Work closely with key stakeholders to continually understand and update business critical project deliverables.
    • Follow a rigorous problem-solving methodology, analyze a broad range of data, and interpret to deliver solutions to business-critical issues.
    • Focus commercially to ensure projects deliver the highest value for the organization.
    • Manage, guide, and influence the study management team (direct reports) and other specialist teams (as necessary) to meet the critical project outcomes. 
    • Resource the project and ensuring the retention of staff for the duration of the project. 
    • Collaborate and effectively manage project interfaces by leading and continuously collaborating with the appropriate stakeholders to align and maximize efforts for project delivery.
    • Proactively resolve performance, scope, cost, and schedule issues with contractors as they arise.
    • Guide and support the team in their management of stakeholder relationships.
    • Ensure the right systems and processes are in place and that these are applied in the Contracts/ Project.
    • Design and implement innovative approaches to problem solving to accelerate delivery time on projects and other step change improvements.
    • Deliver on tight timeframes with clear, measurable results, with effective control of contractor variations.
    • Assign project team leaders to manage cost, schedule, and performance of individual processes, ensuring that the integration of the processes meet the business need and project objectives.
    • Provide specialist project management and engineering support and direction to project stakeholders, building on and sharing the lessons learnt.
    • Manage and monitor project performance on an ongoing basis to identify issues and opportunities for continuous improvement early and take pre-emptive action.
    • Follow rigorous project management methodologies to ensure successful delivery of the project to stakeholders, including the management of global/regional issues and the mitigation of risks.
    • Monitor, report and control all relevant aspects of the project to forecast costs and schedules, identify trends and take action to minimise threats and take advantage of opportunities.
    • Transfer documentation and knowledge at project close-out.
    • Provide leadership in HSEC by anticipating current and future risks and managing these, as well as setting and monitoring objectives to ensure standards are met.

    • Provide leadership in Data Management by setting the right standards and procedures to preserve and protect information assets, and then monitoring compliance to these standards.

    The Requirements

    • Tertiary Qualifications: Relevant Engineering degree or equivalent (essential).
    • Project Management Qualification (essential) e.g. PMI – PMP.
    • Proven ability in leading multidiscipline projects in an industrial environment.
    • Proven ability to optimize project design in similar industry.
    • Proven ability to deliver the innovative thinking and design stage of project.  
    • Demonstrate commitment to HSE Management in a Project/Service Contract environment.
    • Experience in the mining or other heavy industry in a leadership role with a strategic commercial focus. 
    • Ability to relate to a varied group of people from a range of different cultural and industry backgrounds.
    • Must have highly developed skills in leadership, organisation, communication, problem resolution and negotiation.
    • Ability to manage multiple parties simultaneously. 
    • Fluent in Spanish, French, or English (depending upon Location).

    Business Analyst

    The Responsibilities: 

    • Support the development of the Africa Operational Excellence & Technology initiatives from
    • Concept through to Feasibility Studies
    • Engagement with site for progression of the Operational Excellence & Technology initiatives
    • Analysis of business cases for Operational Excellence & Technology investment
    • Engagement of consultants for works initiatives including preparation of scopes, tendering, assessment and award processes

    The Requirements: 

    • Bachelor’s degree in Metallurgy, Chemical or Process Engineering
    • Postgraduate in Business, Finance, Technology, Analytics (desirable)
    • +5 years’ experience in an operation, maintenance, functional roles in an industrial business
    • Experience in finance, strategy development and execution
    • Demonstrated experience in operations, maintenance or project management in mining industry
    • Background or experience in continuous improvement or change programs
    • Experience in financial assessment (desirable)
    • Knowledge of Power BI and/or Tableau (beneficial)
    • Experience in data gathering, cleaning, analysing (SQL, Excel, Power Query) (beneficial)

    Operational Readiness Manager

    The Role

    This position reports to the Project Director & Project Sponsor and is responsible for providing Operations Readiness leadership for the project team, the owner, and other stakeholders in delivering the business case such that assets, systems, and personnel are in place to realize the full potential business case and plan for and implement best practices in operational readiness for the Project.

    This is a permanent role, based in Johannesburg, South Africa, with regular travel to the DRC.

    Responsibilities

    • Provide a project focus on the requirements of the owner for the start-up and ongoing operation of the business, including project delivery, asset management, business systems, policies and procedures, organisation, and training in accordance with the approved plan.
    • Manage short to medium term sustainable technical improvements to address a range of business-critical risks.
    • Assist in reviewing changes in scope and engineering design for variance in project value.
    • Monitor the development of the project in terms of compliance with statutory, legal such that all requirements are satisfied.
    • Collaborate with a range of stakeholders:
    • in the operating business to deliver on the project outcomes within the operational readiness guidelines,
    • in Procurement to validate supply chain contracts that deliver to the agreed quality, quantity, and timeline,
    • within the project team to ensure effective handover and start-up activities.
    • Manage an Operations Readiness schedule during each project stage detailing the activities required to achieve the plan.
    • Manage cost estimates for Operations Readiness for inclusion in financial modelling and adequate funding during implementation.
    • Facilitate the effective transition (i.e., data) from commissioning to production to achieve stable and consistent operations.
    • Manage the systems, processes, and people capability to enable the operations team to effectively function.
    • Provide leadership in HSEC and manage all Operations Readiness activities from Prefeasibility to Project Handover and Close-out without injury to people or the environment.
    • Monitor the design, schedule, and change management activities associated with Prefeasibility and Feasibility Studies and Detailed Engineering to provide the inclusion of Operational requirements as appropriate.
    • Manage a documented program of project reviews and audits.
    • Ensure that data and documents are properly managed throughout the project lifecycle and that the most updated and complete version is stored in an accessible and secure infrastructure.

    The Requirements

    • Tertiary Qualifications – Recognised/accredited degree in Engineering, Project Management or Business. Specialisation in operational excellence preferred.
    • Licenses / Certifications – PMI PMP preferable.
    • Several years Project Management, Commissioning and Operational Readiness experience in the mining and metals industry.
    • Several years technical operational readiness experience for mining, refining, processing, smelting in extractive industries.
    • Manage and facilitate programs and operational readiness exercises to support stakeholders to prepare to operate and maintain new assets and capabilities being delivered.
    • Broad knowledge of industry/regulatory engineering, HSEC, operational codes and standards.
    • Ability to remain objective and independent in a collaborative manner to solve technical operational problems considering total cost of ownership concepts.
    • Excellent interpersonal, influencing and communication skills across all levels of the organisation.
    • Strong leadership and relationship building skills both including internal and external stakeholders.
    • Semi-autonomous, self-motivated, highly pro-active, and resilient attitude.
    • Technical problem-solving, facilitation, analytical, leadership/ management and negotiation capabilities with contractors/subcontractors.
    • Good understanding of financial concepts and requirements supported by a broad knowledge of commercial and financial principles.
    • Technical writing experience – including reports and presentations.
