    Digital Book Production & eBook Coordinator

    Job Description

    • Jonathan Ball Publishers has a vacancy for Digital Book Production & eBook Coordinator in its Cape Town offices. This position will report directly to the Production Manager and requires a detail-oriented individual with strong organisational skills and the ability to work accurately under pressure.
    • The ideal candidate has some experience in print or ebook production, or is a graduate with a lively interest in digital book production and sees a future for themselves in this field.

    Key responsibilities:

    • Ebook production: Coordinate the complete digital (ebook) production process, from proof stage to final eBook files.
    • Quality Assurance: Proof, test, and troubleshoot eBooks on various devices and platforms (Kindle, Apple, Kobo, Bluefire).’
    • Quality Control: Use of eBook validation tools (e.g. EPUBCheck) and device emulators.
    • Digital Asset Coordination: Effective organisation, archiving, and version control of digital files.

    Technical skills:

    • Computer literate: Basic understanding of MS Word, Outlook and Excel and Adobe Acrobat
    • eBook Formats: A good understanding of the different digital book formats and applicability (EPUB, MOBI, PDF, and fixed-layout versus reflowable layout).
    • Metadata: A basic understanding of best practices for metadata to optimise discoverability and sales.
    • Language skills: Fluency in both English and Afrikaans, as the role requires checking ebooks in both these languages

    Bonus Skills

    • DRM: Basic knowledge of digital rights management (DRM)
    • HTML & CSS: Intermediate skills for editing and troubleshooting eBook files.
    • XML: An understanding of XML for metadata and content structure.

    Soft skills:

    • Excellent organisational abilities
    • Time management/scheduling; ability to coordinate multiple projects and different deadlines at the same time.
    • Meticulous; will ensure accuracy in formatting, metadata, and file quality.
    • Problemsolver; will proactively identify and resolve technical, production, and workflow issues.
    • Good communicator; clear and professional communication with different team members (publishers, designers, IT, etc.) and vendors.
    • Customer focus; understands the needs of readers and internal stakeholders.

    Qualifications & Experience

    • A tertiary qualification in publishing or a relevant field, or
    • Experience working in a similar or related role in the production team of a publishing house

    Natural History Commissioning Editor

    Job Description

    • We are seeking a full-time Commissioning Editor based in our Cape Town office to shape and grow our natural history publishing list under the Briza imprint
    • This is a rare opportunity to work at the intersection of science, storytelling and the natural world. Working closely with the Briza Publisher, you will be responsible for identifying, developing and championing books that illuminate nature in all its complexity.
    • You will work closely with authors, editors, photographers and designers to bring projects from conception to published book.

    Key responsibilities

    • Develop and manage a distinctive, commercially successful natural history list with clear editorial vision
    • Identify, commission and negotiate contracts with authors, and cultivate those relationships over time
    • Evaluate proposals and manuscripts, providing editorial feedback and guidance
    • Collaborate with marketing and sales teams to position each title effectively
    • Monitor trends in natural history and the broader trade market

    What we are looking for

    We welcome applications from two distinct backgrounds. Candidates must demonstrate excellence in either of the following:

    Route A — Publishing professional

    Proven editorial experience of three to five years in trade or illustrated non-fiction publishing

    • Demonstrable track record as an editor or commissioning editor
    • Experience managing the full publishing cycle with strict adherence to deadlines
    • Strong relationships with authors
    • A genuine enthusiasm for natural history

    or

    Route B — Natural history expert

    Specialist knowledge in the natural sciences or nature writing

    • Recognised expertise in a field such as ecology, zoology, botany, ornithology, conservation biology or nature writing
    • Strong existing network within the natural history, scientific or environmental community
    • Experience communicating complex ideas to non-specialist audiences (writing, broadcasting, education or similar)
    • Demonstrable editorial judgement – evidenced through curation, writing, reviewing or commissioning in any capacity
    • Willingness to develop publishing skills with structured training

    In addition, all candidates should possess excellent written English, strong interpersonal skills and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously under deadline.

    Distribution Centre Manager

    Job Description

    • Jonathan Ball Publishers based in Denver, Johannesburg, is looking for a seasoned Distribution Centre Manager, reporting to the Operations Director.

    Key responsibilities:

    • Support the growth strategy for the lines of business in order to grow the revenue and profit
    • Manage and report on Service Level Agreements (including overseeing management information reports)
    • Translate the requirements of lines of business into operational plans for the functions reporting in, to ensure timely service delivery at right cost and quality, aligned to overall sub- divisional strategy
    • Monitor and enforce compliance of all standard operating procedures are in place for all areas and monitor and enforce compliance
    • Maximize the efficiency and productivity levels of the operation, ensure compliance with agreed standards, continuously seek to optimize processes and find value add opportunities for the division
    • Enable profit centres to meet all operational targets, by managing efficiencies and continuous improvement
    • Ensure that effective management controls and good governance practices are in place
    • Perform financial planning, budgeting, forecasting, reporting and analysis of data
    • Build effective, value adding, transparent relationships with all stakeholders through regular communication and reporting
    • Identify opportunities and negotiate agreements with service providers and internal stakeholders
    • Evaluate technology and capital requirements as determined by the tactical plan of the division
    • Actively manage/assist and implement capital projects within the division
    • Plan for, select, develop and retain suitable staff to ensure a high-performance team
    • Establish efficient security, stock control and optimum storage conditions for all the product lines
    • Oversee the processing of all inbound and outbound orders and ensure the maintenance of accurate records of all goods in and out of storage

    Requirements/Experience:

    • Relevant degree or diploma in logistics; MBA or a commercial
    • At least 10 years’ experience in warehousing within a distribution environment, with at least 5 at a management level
    • Knowledge and understanding of warehousing and distribution
    • Sound knowledge of relevant health and safety legislation
    • Proficient in relevant software packages and applications
    • Experience in Warehouse Management Systems
    • Previous experience with BookMaster and Dynaman would prove

    Eastern Cape Journalist

    Main Purpose:

    • To produce relevant, compelling and factually correct news, analysis, feature and multimedia content for News24 and its national audience on subjects and events affecting Nelson Mandela Bay to deadline each day.

    Key responsibilities:

    • Investigate and research article content for news, analysis and feature stories on newsworthy subjects and events in Nelson Mandela Bay.
    • Produce enterprise news ideas and stories focusing on the city which will set the national news agenda.
    • Produce breaking news according to News24’s standards and norms.
    • Maintain and grow a diverse network of contacts across the Eastern Cape, including, but not limited to, emergency services, police, courts, municipalities and major political parties.
    • Write quality news and feature articles, adhering to strict deadlines.
    • Create target-market-specific articles and multi-media content.
    • Generate at least two feature ideas a month.
    • Adhere to the quality, style and content standards as laid out and required by News24.
    • Comply with the requirements of the South African Press Code.

    Skills and competencies:

    • A strong and deep understanding of the Eastern Cape, Nelson Mandela Bay in particular, its people and the social, economic, current and political affairs of the province.
    • The ability to identify, initiate and generate original news angles on a daily basis.
    • Excellent command of English.
    • The ability to produce quality content under high pressure.
    • A self-starter with good time management skills and discipline to keep to deadlines.
    • Sound news judgment.
    • Passion for and knowledge of digital media.

    Qualifications and experience:

    • Relevant tertiary qualification.
    • At least three years’ experience as a news reporter in a mainstream newsroom.
    • Valid drivers’ licence
