    Medical Technologist (P003089)

    Job description

    PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

    • Additional capacity is needed within Center for Human Metabolomics (CHM) to assist with the increasing research, contract research and service load.
    • This position will be tasked to perform analyses and maintain specialised equipment in CHM laboratories.

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Operational activities

    • Perform routine analysis, involvement in sample handling, quality assurance and reporting of results.
    • Result interpretation
    • Interpret and report results and take appropriate action.
    • Method development, validation, quality assurance and accreditation
    • Participate in the quality assurance process as outlined in ISO 15189.
    • General laboratory maintenance
    • Ensure that laboratory equipment is at all times maintained.
    • Effective and efficient inventory management.
    • Continuous professional development and registration
    • Working toward the accreditation as a medical scientist or appropriate naming at the appropriate qualification body.
    • Liaise with external clients
    • Answering enquiries by Pathologist/Dr’s as instructed by manager.
    • Customer satisfaction and feedback complaints.
    • Ad-hoc tasks
    • The support of academic staff or students as per instruction by manager.

    Minimum requirements

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Teaching and Learning:

    • Delivery of lectures as per timetable and consultations with students including co-supervision of Masters and Honors students.

    • Evidence of research outputs (postgraduate student delivery and scientific papers).

    ADDED ADVANTAGES & PREFERENCES:

    • A minimum of three (3) years’ postgraduate student supervision experience.
    • A minimum of two (2) years’ sound practical experience in teaching postgraduate students.
    • Experience in executing clinical trials.
    • Experience in funding applications.

    KEY FUNCTIONAL/TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:

    • Ability to conceptualise, plan and execute research projects in micronutrient bioavailability using techniques like stable isotopes.
