    Principal Mechanical Engineer

    Overview / Responsibilities

    Wood is currently recruiting for a Principal/Lead Mechanical Engineer with extensive experience in the mining and minerals industry on large capital projects, including projects in remote locations and other countries, in particular third world countries.

    Job Objective:

    • To function as a Lead Engineer to coordinate and supervise engineering and design functions within a project / study context.
    • To function as a Principal Engineer, support the department manager with the running of the mechanical and piping department.
    • Ensure that designs are in accordance with project / study requirements and company objectives and are produced in a timely and cost-effective manner.
    • To work in a safe manner, complying with and actively contributing to the WOOD Health, Safety and Environmental HSE policies, manuals and procedures. At all times considering the health, safety and welfare of fellow workers, visitors, clients, community and the environment.

    Key Accountabilities & Responsibilities:

    Project Responsibilities

    • Coordinate the mechanical engineering effort within the project team to meet the project schedule and budget.
    • Assist the project engineering manager with accurate forecasting of discipline manpower.
    • Prepare/Review technical specifications, contract specifications, calculations, reports, design criteria, tender documentation, installation contract documents and other documents required by the project / study in accordance with project, discipline, statutory regulations, good-practice, and company procedural requirements.
    • Ensure project filing system is maintained and kept up to date in a discipline or project system.
    • Ensure the that designs produced support the method of construction and ease of plant maintenance and operations.
    • Ensure design engineering standards are maintained and adhered to on all projects.
    • Review and comment on design documents and drawings from own discipline and from other disciplines.
    • Review and approve vendor documentation for compliance with project / study specifications.
    • Estimate, control and review design scope changes.
    • Attend factory acceptance tests and provide input into vendor’s test documentation.
    • Liaise with client to ensure that design is in accordance with agreed requirements.
    • Liaise with Site construction staff on technical queries on resolution of engineering design issues
    • Prepare project close out reports with comparison of design and procurement budgets.
    • Conduct regular design group meetings within a project / study context.
    • Provide timely reports regarding all discussions held and progress made. Ensure all correspondence is recorded.
    • Allocate work and aid discipline engineers and designers on projects / studies.
    • Input into progress reports, including listing achievements and highlighting issues as required.
    • Work closely with other consultants and other disciplines and Project / Study Managers to ensure that client’s objectives are met in a timely manner.
    • Ensure compliance and take initiative for safety and environmental issues.
       

    Departmental Responsibilities

    • To stand in as interim Department Manager as required from time to time.
    • To assist the Department Manager with the day-to-day management of the Mechanical & Piping department, as required.
    • To participate in the development of departmental framework documents.
    • To provided technical guidance and best practice inputs to the rest of the mechanical team.
    • To co-ordinate with functional manager to develop and update the discipline technical quality assurance checklists and processes.
    • To conduct Technical Audits of the Mechanical and Piping Disciplines on projects.
    • To assume responsibility for developing man-hour estimates for mechanical & piping for new proposals.
    • Provide mentoring to younger engineers to develop the required skillsets.
    • Actively supports recruitment, selection, transfers, and promotion of resources to meet succession and business plans.
    • Support the development and retention of motivated and competent people.
       

    HSSE Responsibilities

    • Provide positive and demonstrated leadership on HSSE issues within your area of operation.
    • Read, understand and implement the HSSE policies and procedures.
    • Promote an enthusiastic HSSE culture that delivers positive commitment to and engages all employees in continuous improvement in HSSE performance.
    • Monitor personnel under your area of control comply with their individual responsibilities to HSSE matters.

    • Take care of your own health and safety whilst at work; and ensure your activities do not adversely affect the health and safety of others.
    • Report to immediate supervisor all incidents, which have or could result in personal injury or environmental damage.
       

    Skills / Qualifications

    Qualifications

    • BSc, BEng, or B. Tech with a minimum of 15 years’ experience.
    • ECSA registered
       

    Knowledge, skills and experience:

    • Minimum of 10 years Mechanical design experience in the mining and minerals processing area in the design office and in the field.
    • Well-developed computer skills and knowledge of word, databases, spreadsheets and discipline related application software.
    • Site experience – construction and commissioning.
    • Slurry pumping experience. (Internal piping, Overland piping)
    • Materials Handling experience. (Bins, Chutes, Conveyors, Crushing and Screening circuits)
    • Mechanical Package experience.
    • Must have functioned as a Lead Engineer on EPCM Execution Projects.
    • ust have completed PreFeasibility and Feasibility Studies as a Lead Engineer.

    Senior Piping Engineer

    • Produce designs in accordance with project, discipline, statutory regulations, good practice, and company procedural requirements.
    • Produce project filing system which is maintained and kept up to date in a discipline or project system, which all project design personnel utilise.
    • Engineering input into PFD’s, P&ID’s, line lists, valve lists and SPI lists.
    • Ensure the that designs produced support the method of construction and ease of plant maintenance and operations.
    • Ensure piping design engineering standards are maintained and adhered to on all projects.
    • Provide technical guidance to Project staff on various aspects of design.
    • Review piping installation contract tenders and produce technical adjudications / recommendations.
    • Review and comment on design documents and drawings from own discipline and from other disciplines.
    • Review vendor documentation for compliance with project / study specifications.
    • Compare procurement costs against budget and provide feedback to estimating.
    • Review vendor documentation for compliance with project specifications.

    • Technical Competence – in terms of core engineering theory from first principles and ability to extend theory to new and complex equipment.
    • Site experience – construction and commissioning.
    • Design & Construction of pumping systems in a mining environment i.e., Slurry Piping systems, HDPE piping system.
    • Experience Lined piping systems such as Ceramic, Rubber, HDPE, and Copon Lining.
    • Experience in conducting pipe stress analysis on piping in the mining environment.
