    Senior Handyman – Hydraulics

    CRITICAL PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES

    • Implement tasks as assigned by supervisors in line with estimated timelines. 
    • Provide technical assistance to artisans during repairs on South African Navy vessels, setting up testing of overhauled equipment and manufacturing of any jigs and fixtures if necessary. 
    • Transports equipment removed to and from vessels, cleans equipment removed from ships, surface vessels and submarines as and when required, and collects material from the store as and when required by artisans. 
    • Adhere to Occupational Health and Safety regulations and initiate appropriate actions and rectify any unsafe activities. 
    • Conduct risk assessments and mitigate any identified risks. 
    • Identify procedures to be followed and collate all requirements. 
    • Execute the job adhering to all instructions, procedures, policies and regulations and stay within time and cost constraints. 
    • Liaise with, support and assist superiors, project managers and other sections to ensure optimum completion of jobs by Dockyard. 
    • Operates pendant and/or cab-controlled cranes and lifting equipment to assist artisans by carrying out lifting and basic slinging of equipment in the workshop. 
    • Maintain a neat work place and ensure that tools and equipment are secured at the end of each shift 

    QUALIFICATIONS

    • Grade 9

    EXPERIENCE

    • Minimum of 5-years relevant experience as a handyman.
    • Overhead crane certificate.

    Senior Technician Metallurgist

    CRITICAL PERFORMANCE AREAS

    • Provide a consultancy service on all aspects of physical metallurgy, analytical verification, physical and mechanical testing, optical and electron microscopy.
    • Liaise with the other stakeholders such as NDT Section to ensure a components fitness for purpose as well as to analyze defective materials, components and structures to determine their cause of failures and fractures. Aspects such as design, manufacturing route, welding requirements and quality control must be covered. 
    • Consult and advice the SA Navy and Dockyard with regards to the selection of materials for application during fabrication, construction and other uses. 
    • Consult with ships’ marine engineering officers regarding material related problems to ensure they are correctly informed regarding material changes and analytical structures of metals. 
    • To provide Metallurgical Specification Services for replacement parts 
    • Draw up specifications with regards to metals for the Fleet Logistics, Armscor Dockyard, Foundry, and other SA Navy units. 
    • Carry out inspections and audits (NSD Wingfield etc.) to verify that the end product conforms to the specification supplied. 
    • Work closely with the NDT Section to analyze defective materials, components and structures to determine their cause of failures and fractures. 
    • Liaise with ships, submariners, and marine engineering officers to address material related problems, specifications and procedures regarding material failures. 
    • To verify that all metals: mild steels and stainless steels, brass, copper alloys, aluminium, aluminium bronzes and plastics conforms to the required specification with regard to their Chemical Composition, Mechanical Properties and corrosion resistance. Failure of which could have a detrimental effect on the operational capability of ships and submarines and possibly loss of life. 
    • Ensure Metallurgical reports meet the high standard of the Engineering Services in terms of quality, correctness, numbering and that the relevant information is attached to the reports. 
    • Perform analytical, physical, mechanical and microscopically tests on engineering materials (metallic or non-metallic) purchased or used by the SA Navy using various sophisticated electronic, mechanical and optical test equipment in order to verify (certify) or identify the materials amongst others  

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    • BTech. Metallurgical Engineering 
    • Registration with SACNASP or ECSA or relevant body as Scientist or Engineering Technician or eligible for registration will be an added advantage. 

    EXPERIENCE:

    • 4-5 years post qualification experience in the field of Metallurgy 
    • Knowledge in a combination of the following: 
    • Materials failure investigation and laboratory testing.

    Lifting Machinery Inspector and Ship Surveyor

    CRITICAL PERFORMANCE AREAS:

    • Perform routine and periodic inspections on lifting equipment, including cranes (overhead, gantry), hydraulic industrial lifting devices and lifting tackles for wear, damage, or any defects that could compromise their performance and safety. 
    • Conduct load testing and functional assessments to verify operational safety and capacity. 
    • Review and validate testing and inspection data, ensuring that the equipment meets the manufacturer’s specifications and legal safety requirements. 
    • Ensure that all inspections and certifications comply with the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act, South African National Accreditation System (SANAS) standards, and relevant international guidelines (e.g., ISO standards for lifting equipment). 
    • Compile detailed reports and issue certificates of compliance after inspections and testing are completed. 
    • Engage with engineers, contractors, and naval personnel to discuss findings and offer recommendations for machinery maintenance and improvements. 
    • Keep up to date with changes in safety legislation and best practices in lifting equipment safety to ensure continued compliance. 
    • Regularly review and update work instructions and procedures to ensure they align with the latest safety standards and best practices. 
    • Collaborate with engineers and naval officers to ensure that all inspections meet the necessary safety and operational standards. 

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    • National Diploma in Mechanical/Electrical/Structural Engineering or 7 years Industrial Experience in lifting machinery inspections, with at least 5 years serving as a Registered LMI with ECSA. 

    EXPERIENCE:

    • Minimum 5 years post Registration as an LMI. 
    • Maritime related experience will be advantageous.
