    Job Description

    Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in the School of Journalism and Media Studies

    • The School of Journalism and Media Studies invite suitably qualified candidates to join their team in the field of Radio Journalism and Audio Storytelling.

    OVERALL PURPOSE OF POSITION: 

    • To contribute to the academic project of the School of Journalism and Media Studies (JMS) as set out in its vision statement. As part of this, to produce self-reflexive graduates and media workers whose practice is probing, imaginative, civic-minded and outspoken.
    • To contribute to the fields of knowledge and the social environment in which the school is based.
    • To do all of this through teaching, research, community engagement and media production, focusing on practices of relevance to Audio Studies, Audio Journalism and Audio Storytelling.

    KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

    • Teaching in fields of relevance to Audio Journalism and Audio Storytelling: To develop and manage coursework across the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes relevant to the study and practice of audio journalism and audio storytelling. Pursuing this goal in line with the school’s vision for social change and the university’s vision for community engagement. Through such teaching, developing students’ competence and knowledge in the study and practice of audio journalism and audio storytelling. This teaching incorporates experiential learning which takes place in context of Rhodes Music Radio (RMR)
    • The development and management of audio journalism and audio storytelling practices and projects: Initiating and managing partnerships in audio journalism and audio storytelling for the School of JMS. To do so primarily to open up opportunities for JMS students and staff to be involved in research and experiential learning opportunities concerned with audio journalism and audio storytelling.
    • Conducting research relevant to audio journalism and audio storytelling: Collaborating with academic staff in the School of JMS to integrate such research in the school’s experiential learning projects, particularly (RMR) and producing and publishing research of relevance to socially engaged communication practice.

    The Requirements

    Lecturer

    • An MA in Journalism Studies, Media Studies, Communication Studies or a related field, preferably with PhD progress made. Please note that, as a probation requirement, candidates will be expected to commit to PhD research if appointed.
    • Some teaching and/or teaching facilitation experience is required. The incumbent should be acquainted with online/blended teaching, testing, and marking, or be willing to acquire these skills immediately upon taking the job.
    • Experience at an editorial level in the management of a radio journalism newsroom or production house/organisation that produces audio journalism.
    • At least 3 years’ experience in conceptualising and implementing audio journalism / audio storytelling projects in a way that aligns with the school’s principles of social justice.

    Ability to teach in disciplinary areas such as the following is required:

    • Journalism Studies
    • Audio Studies
    • Communication Studies
    • Community Media and Engaged and Participative Communication
    • Audience Studies
    • Experience in mentoring and/or supervising postgraduate students would be an advantage.
    • Some evidence and experience in conducting research. Evidence of accredited published outputs would be an advantage.
    • Some record of administration, management and/or leadership roles (leadership roles may be informal).

    Senior Lecturer

    • A PhD in Journalism Studies, Media Studies, Communication Studies or a related field.
    • Considerable teaching experience at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels is required. The incumbent should be acquainted with online/blended teaching, testing, and marking, or be willing to acquire these skills immediately upon taking the job.
    • Experience at an editorial level in the management of a radio journalism newsroom or production house/organisation that produces audio journalism.
    • At least 5 years’ experience in conceptualising and implementing audio journalism / audio storytelling projects in a way that aligns with the school’s principles of social justice.

    Experience in teaching in disciplinary areas such as the following is required:

    • Journalism Studies
    • Audio Studies
    • Communication Studies
    • Community Media and Engaged and Participative Communication
    • Audience Studies
    • Research supervision experience up to at least a Master's degree to completion is required.
    • Emerging national profile in the discipline and a credible record of accredited, peer-reviewed publications.
    • Track record of administration, management and/or leadership roles (leadership roles may be informal).

    Information Systems 

    • The Department of Information Systems invite suitably qualified candidates to join their team. 

    Main Objectives

    • All academics are responsible for disseminating knowledge (teaching and learning), creating knowledge (research), and engaging with the community, and for recognising differences in the execution of these responsibilities across the various departments and Faculties.
    • Academics are also expected to assume administrative, management, and/or leadership duties at the departmental, faculty, and/or university levels. 

    The Requirements

    • PhD in Information Systems or equivalent, in exceptional circumstances, a Master’s Degree in Information Systems or equivalent, where the completion of the PhD is imminent (a letter from the supervisor stating that the PhD has been or is about to be submitted for examination).
    • Professional experience in: Information Systems or equivalent

    Academic experience:

    • Teaching and course creation experience at the undergraduate and/or post-graduate levels required.
    • Experience in teaching in the following disciplinary areas and skillsets: Data Analytics, Digital transformation and experience, Artificial Intelligence and Cloud Computing.
    • Research supervision with a track record of at least a Master’s degree required

    No Academic experience:

    • Leader in training and/or mentorship in the workplace
    • Ability to teach any one or more of the disciplinary areas
    • Leader in their professional arena
    • Emerging national profile in Information Systems or relevant discipline
    • Track record of administration, management and/or leadership roles (leadership roles may be informal)

    Readvertisement: Associate Professor in Information Systems

    Main Objectives

    • All academics are responsible for disseminating knowledge (teaching and learning), creating knowledge (research) and community engagement, and recognising differences in executing these responsibilities within the various departments and Faculties.     • In addition, an Associate Professor is to provide academic leadership in the following areas: teaching and learning; research and community engagement, and contribute towards the institution's governance. 

    The Requirements

    • PhD in Information Systems or equivalent
    • Professional experience in Information Systems or equivalent will be an advantage
    • Considerable teaching experience at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels is required
    • Experience in teaching Information Systems, with the ability to teach in the following areas: IT Governance, Artificial Intelligence, Digital Ethics, and Digital Transformation, Systems Analysis and Design, and Project Management
    • Research Supervision of Master’s and PhD degrees
    • An established research group/area
    • Established national profile and emerging national profile in the discipline
    • Track record of administration, management and/or leadership roles

    Readvertisement: Manager: Alumni and Stakeholder Relations

    Main Objectives

    • The key role of the Manager, Alumni and Stakeholder Relations, is to manage and strengthen mutually beneficial relationships between the University and its alumni, both locally and internationally, as well as with other strategic stakeholders, in support of the University’s Communication and Advancement strategy.
    • The incumbent is responsible for driving sustainable alum engagement programmes and developing integrated stakeholder engagement strategies informed by ongoing research and insights into alum needs, interests, and institutional priorities.
    • The role focuses on building, nurturing, and sustaining meaningful relationships across diverse alumni and stakeholder groupings, while creating opportunities and platforms for alumni to connect and reconnect with one another and with their alma mater.
    • Working closely with the Fundraising function, and Communications and Media Relations, the role also contributes to cultivating a culture of giving among alumni and strengthening alum participation in advancing the University’s strategic objectives.
    • In addition, the position seeks to foster connections between alums, prospective students, and current students, creating visible role models and strengthening lifelong engagement with the University.

    The Requirements

    • A relevant B Degree (NQF level 7) plus approximately 7 years’ relevant experience, where such experience includes: -
    • Previous experience in alums and stakeholder relationship management, and/or be able to demonstrate a track record of success in relationship-building skills, familiarity with working to mobilise constituent groups.
    • Demonstrable success in running projects which are aimed at achieving support for philanthropic programmes.
    • Previous experience in a position where work plans may extend over several years and where a high degree of persuasiveness is seen as key to success.
    • At least 3 years’ management experience.
    • Excellent communication (written), presentation, networking and negotiation skills working with diverse stakeholders.
    • Demonstrable creative and conceptual ability with a focus on continuous innovation
