    Medical Officer Grade 1 –3 Paediatric Surgery

    Requirements :

    • MBChB. FCS(SA) Primary. Valid registration with the HPCSA as an independent medical practitioner.

    Duties :

    • The successful candidate will be expected to work as a medical officer in the Paediatric Surgery Unit at Steve Biko Academic Hospital. The applicant will be required to work overtime and weekends as needed, according to the demands of the unit. Duties will include clinical work in the wards, outpatient department, and theatre. The applicant will be expected to actively participate in the academic program of the unit and research experience will be a definite advantage.

    Medical Officer Grade 1 –3 Paediatric

    Requirements :

    • The candidate must hold an MMed in Paediatrics or FCPaed (SA) qualification and be a registered medical professional with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA).
    • A demonstrated interest in Neonatology is essential, and the successful candidate must commit to completing the Certificate in Neonatology offered by the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa (CMSA).
    • After-hours duties include Neonatal and Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (ICU) responsibilities. The candidate should demonstrate strong problem-solving and sound clinical decision-making abilities, effective leadership, clear communication skills, and constructive conflict management.
    • Active participation in the department's academic activities is a core requirement. This includes involvement in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and engagement in clinical research initiatives.
    • Ongoing professional development and active clinical teaching and assessment involvement within Paediatrics and Neonatology are essential.
    • Proficiency in computer-based applications relevant to patient care and clinical management is required.

    Duties :

    • The successful candidate will be responsible for coordinating Neonatal care across the various components of the Department of Paediatrics and related disciplines.
    • This includes the provision of comprehensive patient management within a tertiary-level Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), as well as ensuring continuity of care through appropriate referral and support within the primary and secondary healthcare sectors.
    • Effective networking across the referral cluster will be essential to optimise patient flow and maximise the utilisation of the limited NICU bed capacity. The candidate will be expected to oversee in- and outpatient follow-up for selected neonates who are not yet suitable for transfer to lower levels of care post-discharge. This continuity of care is vital to improving patient outcomes.
    • Key responsibilities will include the supervision and management of medical staff within the neonatal unit. The role also entails administrative duties, including accurate ICD-10 coding and meticulous clinical record keeping.
    • Active participation in academic meetings, morbidity and mortality (M&M) reviews, and relevant hospital committees is required. Participation in commuted overtime is compulsory.
    • The successful candidate must demonstrate a strong commitment to clinical training, with a focus on Neonatology and relevant medical domains. Clinical knowledge must be applied in practice, transferred through teaching and supervision of students and registrars, and contribute to ongoing academic and clinical research within the field.

    Medical Officer Grade 1 –3 Ophthalmology

    Requirements :

    • MBChB or equivalent. FC Ophth (SA) and MMed (Ophth). Registration as a specialist Ophthalmology with the HPCSA. Research and teaching experience will be an added advantage.

    Duties :

    • To render a support service to the Chief Specialist Ophthalmology, with respect to administrative duties, service provision, guidance and instruction of junior colleagues and ophthalmologists in training, training of medical students and other medical personnel in the provision of tertiary care within ophthalmology and the supervision of academic ophthalmology at all levels. -Effective Administration of Specialty Clinic within the Department.
    • Effective and efficient provision of patient care at specialist and subspecialist level. Effective and mature guidance and instruction to junior colleagues and Ophthalmology registrars and fellows.
    • Effectively and comprehensively training medical students and other medical personnel in the provision of tertiary care within Ophthalmology.
    • Effective and mature encouragement of, guidance and participation in, academic activities for both undergraduate and postgraduate levels within the clinical department.
    • To perform any other task as requested by the Head of the Ophthalmology Department UP and the Ophthalmology unit Steve Biko Academic Hospital.

    Professional Nurse General - PNA2 Grade 1

    Requirements :

    • Diploma/Degree in nursing (Basic R171, R174 or R425) qualification or equivalent that allows registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as a Professional/Registered Nurse. Registration with SANC as Professional/Registered Nurse. Good communication skills, report writing skills, facilitation skills, coordination skills, planning and organizational skills, problem solving skills, information management skills.

    Duties :

    • Provide direction and supervision for the implementation of the nursing plan (clinical Practice/quality patient care. Implement standards, practices, criteria an indicator for quality nursing.
    • Practice nursing and health care in accordance with the laws and regulations relevant to nursing and health care. Maintain and constructive working relationship with nursing and other stake holders.
    • Utilize human, physical and material resources efficiently and effectively. Demonstrate an understanding of legislation and related legal and ethical nursing practices. Perform clinical nursing practice and promote quality nursing care in accordance with the scope of practice and nursing standards as determined by the institution. Work as part of multidisciplinary team to ensure good nursing care.
    • Work effectively, amicably with persons of diverse intellectual, cultural, racial or religious differences. Able to plan and organize own work and that of support of personnel to ensure proper nursing care.
    • Provision of quality patient care through adherence to set standards, policies and procedures. To provide more complex nursing care that leads to improved service delivery by upholding Batho-Pele Principles and Patient’s Rights Charter.
    • Act as shift leader in Unit (when necessary). Effective utilization of resources. Participation in training and research. Maintenance of professional growth, ethical standards and self-development. Must be prepared to work shifts and be rotated.
