Main Purpose:

• Produce relevant, compelling and factually correct news, analysis, feature and other content on education for News24 and its national audience to deadline each day.

Job Outputs:

• Investigate and research article content for news, analysis and feature stories on newsworthy education subjects and events in South Africa;
• Produce enterprise news ideas and stories focusing on developments in the education sector and beat which will set the national news agenda;
• Produce breaking news according to News24’s standards and norms;
• Maintain and grow a diverse network of contacts across the education sector, including, but not limited to, government departments, schools, universities, think tanks, NGOs and interest groups.
• Write quality news and feature articles, adhering to strict deadlines;
• Create target-market-specific articles;
• Generate at least one in-depth feature ideas per quarter;
• Adhere to the quality, style and content standards as laid out and required by News24;
• Comply with the requirements of the South African Press Code;

• A strong and deep understanding of the education sector and the policies which govern this sector in South Africa;
• Able to write fluently and clearly in English;

Minimum Requirements:

• Diploma or degree in journalism, languages or media studies
• Experience writing for a mainstream newspaper or magazine or reporting for an online or wire news operation or a broadcast news service;
• Good general knowledge;
• Knowledge of topical issues and current affairs;
• Valid driver’s licence;
• Passion for media.

Job Summary:

• News24 is on the lookout for a digitally savvy night site editor to join our desk team. We are looking for someone with an impeccable eye for quality and a passion for journalism, as well as the ability to thrive in the fast-paced world of online news.

Minimum Requirements:

• A relevant tertiary qualification;
• At least 5-10 years of experience in the journalism industry;
• Experience in online editing;
• Sound editorial knowledge, including proficiency as a writer with strong editing skills;
• In-depth knowledge of the target market;
• Proficiency in relevant content management programs and analytical tools.

Skills & Competencies:

• Passion for news, a flair for story packaging and strong communication skills.
• Good sense of news and news management, with an ability to identify content that resonates with local audiences;
• Good attention to detail, with excellent writing, rewriting and sub-editing skills and a flair for headlines.
• Must have a good understanding of local and international news, and a passion for breaking news;
• Must be versatile, flexible and adaptable to change;
• Must be able to perform under pressure, with short turn-around times;
• Excellent attention to detail;
• Must have knowledge of a CMS and analytics tools, such as Google Analytics;
• Willingness to work irregular hours, over weekends and public holidays.

Duties & Responsibilities:

• Manage a team to ensure online content is ready for publication with the appropriate collateral to enrich copy;
• Ability to quickly compile breaking news and/or aggregations;
• Manage the production and publishing of content and ensure that fresh, accurate content is published and ranked appropriately;
• Work with section editors to manage the flow of content to the main News24 homepage;
• Edit content to ensure it’s in line with the publication's style and take responsibility for quality of content;
• Manage and run live updates;
• Work on weekends and/or public holidays where required.
