    Unit Manager - Cardiac ICU - Richards Bay

    Description

    The UM is responsible and accountable to ensure that all systems and processes are implemented and monitored as required by Melomed group.

     Implement principles of Professional Practise

    • Legislative requirements   Annual practice Certification
    • Ensure compliance to all SANC regulations including but not limited to licencing, Acts and Omissions, Scope of Practise, Notices and New publications.
    • Compliance to National, Provision and Group Policies, directives and standards ( DOH, DOL, NICD,)
    • Ensure compliance to the nursing ethical code of conduct
    • Enforce the company dress code
    • Ensure the professional conduct of staff at all times

    The UM must:  Plan, Lead, Organise, and Control the following processes in the ward.

    • All therapeutic and clinical outcomes and interventions
    • Ensure staff arrive timeously for the shift.
    • Ensure a complete and therapeutic handover is done at the beginning of every shift.
    • Ensure staff adhere to care plans and scientific nursing processes
    • Ensure staff adhere to all Best Care always bundles.
    • Ensure a safe therapeutic environment
    • Ensure accurate record keeping and documentation
    • Ensure that antibiotic stewardship principles are implemented.
    • Effective doctor and multidisciplinary relationship building is essential
    • Coordinate the interdepartmental movement of patient’s admission, transfers and discharges.

    Visible nursing leadership in the wards.

    • All staff must be in their wards until 11h00
    • UM and Staff may only attend meetings, lectures and interviews after 11h00.
    •  Nurses must be focused on the daily ward routine in the morning to prepare for doctors rounds, theatre lists preparation, medication ordering and care rounds such as vital signs  and comfort rounds.
    •  ENAs and CW must ensure environmental tidiness and clean linen changes at the beginning and end of each shift.
    • Ensure visibility on night duty with approval from NSM to address and monitor night staff nursing standards Ensure that at least 1 night shift is worked every 2nd month
    • Monitor and control noise levels
    •  Implement a mid-day huddle for a quick review of patients.

    Staffing requirement according to the establishment and acuity 

    • Ensure safe staffing norms by attending daily staff planning to cover day and night shift, afterhours and call out staff.
    • Ensure cost efficient sessional and agency staff utilisation as approved at the planning session.
    • Ensure accurate acuity assessment of patients such as Tiss scoring  and risk assessments before staff planning is done

    Training and development of staff.

    • Ensure skills development through weekly /monthly in-service training plans in collaboration with the Clinical facilitator
    •  Draw up a monthly Unit specific training plan for your ward.
    • Involve all staff in the skills development and training
    • Ensure sign -off of competencies with CF.
    • Driving CPD compliance
    • Comply with all SANC educational accreditation requirements
    • Ensure the students objectives and outputs are met.
    • Support and accommodate students.
    • Foster a learning/ teaching environment

    Manage and supervise all staff within the unit through fair and equitability HR processes and practises including but not limited to:

    • Recruitment process must be adhered to
    • Interview staff to fill vacancy as indicated on   receiving Head Office authorisation to recruit  
    • Hospital orientation must be attended by all new staff 
    • Ensure speciality Induction programmes are completed and the speciality allowance request form is completed on submission of the signed off . programme.
    • Kronos administration / Manual Process 
    • Scheduling of staff /duty rosters 
    • Rotation of staff between shifts
    • Annual leave planning
    • Leave approval. (ESS)
    • Salary input for month end
    • Time and attendance monitoring and managing
    • Monitor absenteeism trends and action accordingly.
    • Performance management of staff.
    • Draw up a PIP for underperforming staff
    • Ensure regular meetings with your staff to review any poor performance
    • Incident management after a major incident will be referred for informal or formal disciplinary process (as directed by GNSM, GQAM or HR)
    • Ensure corrective remediation is done by the CF/ SL where applicable  

    Business efficiency

    • Stock management process must be adhered to. Ensure that staff are trained and utilise the E billing system
    •  Ensure accurate charging of stock including the scheduled drugs.
    •  Investigate and correct stock variances.
    • Ensure accurate updating of case management by keeping accurate records and informing CM of emergency interventional procedures.
    •  Implement and ensure accurate Tiss scoring accurate theatre clock in times etc.

    Participative leadership

    • Attend management meetings
    • Ensure that feedback is communicated to all levels of your staff
    • Make use of formal and informal communication channels e.g. Notice board, allocation, communication book, emails and minutes of meetings, reports.
    • Have monthly meetings with your staff to communicate important issues and discuss improvement opportunities.  
    • Ensure availability of policy and procedures file with read and sign evidence
    •  Attend forum meetings for policy and documentation development.

    Requirements

    •  Current registration as a registered General Nurse
    • A post graduate qualification in a specialty area is necessary and applicable to the critical care specialty: Trauma, Operating Room, Intensive Care, Neonatal, Oncology, and Maternity.  
    • Proven experience as a shift leader / Deputy Unit Manager 
    •  A post graduate diploma or degree in Management or equivalent is preferable.
    • Excellent interpersonal, communication and administrative skills
    • Excellent leadership qualities and mentoring skills
    • Accurate record keeping and the management of stock
    • Commitment to initiate and implement continuous improvement projects
    • Excellent computer skills
    • Knowledge of the Kronos System

    Registered Nurse - ICU

    Description

    • BLS competent
    • Supervise and orientate junior staff members and students
    • Perform teaching rounds with junior staff members and students
    • Competently administering oral medication
    • Perform wound care

    • Be prepared to partake in in-service training program, by attending and presenting talks formally and informally

    • Knowledge and insight into infection prevention principles
    • Promote and maintain patient health and give health education
    • Knowledge of scientific nursing process
    • Able to complete patient assessments, compiling and implementation of appropriate nursing care plan
    • Safe administration of medication, and knowledge of management of schedule medication
    • Adhere and enforce hospital policies and protocols and quality improvement initiatives
    • Ad hoc duties

    Requirements

    • Current Registration with SANC as a Registered Nurse
    • Post Basic Qualification in Critical Care General will be advantageous
    • Minimum 2 -3 years’ proven experience as a Registered Nurse in ICU
    • Ventilator competency is essential
    • Shift work compulsory and work overtime when required
    • Be flexible and willing to assist in other departments

    Senior Pharmacist

    Description

    • Assume reasonable responsibilities in the absence of Pharmacy Manager
    • Participate in stock control and stock take
    • Facilitate the understanding of systems and policies to all pharmacy staff
    • Provide guidance and consultation regarding pharmaceutical care
    • Keep abreast of current trends and practices in pharmaceutical care
    • Submit annual required CPDs to SAPC
    • Register as a tutor for both interns and pharmacist's assistants with SAPC
    • Attend to emergency call-outs when required
    • Accurate and safe dispensing to both retail and hospital patients
    • Assist with the implementation and maintenance of all aspects related to GPP

    Requirements

    • Minimum of a B. Pharm Degree
