    Assistant Editor: Politics and Opinion

    Key responsibilities:

    • Determine and manage the politics diary on a daily basis.
    • Manage a team of political reporters in Johannesburg and Cape Town (Parliament).
    • Oversee the Opinions team to deliver daily quality opinions and editorial pieces.
    • Maintain regular contact with the head of news to plan and coordinate diaries.
    • Identify the key stories of the day in order to produce consistent and excellent news stories.
    • Adhere to deadlines and publishing schedules to position News24 as the most trusted title in politics.
    • Gather, write and present in-depth political news reports.
    • Analyse political information and produce regular columns and informative analyses.
    • Liaise with the production staff and multimedia editor to produce video and audio content of political news.
    • Build up and maintain a network of local and national contacts.
    • Attend political meetings, gatherings and other events with political role-players.

    Skills and competencies:

    • The ability to manage a team under daily deadlines and in a changing news cycle.
    • The ability to set the agenda with exclusive and in-depth coverage of South African politics.
    • To prioritise big stories with a team of reporters.
    • Analytical thinking to produce insightful columns and analyses.
    • Sound news judgment.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
    • A team player who liaise regularly with fellow editors.

    Qualification and experience:

    • At least ten years’ experience as a political journalist in a national newsroom.
    • A relevant tertiary qualification.
    • Proven experience as political writer with the ability to produce insightful and exclusive stories.
    • A proven network of political contacts.

    Crime and Court Reporter - Cape Town

    Duties and Responsibilities: 

    • Produce original fast and slow court reporting and ideas for news, feature and analysis stories;
    • Report on breaking news stories from local courtrooms;
    • Interview and report on the experiences of victims and witnesses of crime, as well as protagonists in civil cases;
    • Write quality news and feature articles, adhering to strict deadlines and News24’s style;
    • Adhere to the quality, style and content standards as laid out and required by the particular publication
    • Live reporting into News24 live blogs on developing stories;
    • Secure newsmakers for in-depth interviews on topical issues.

    Skills & Competencies:

    • Established network of contacts in local courts, and in local and provincial police;
    • Strong command of English;
    • Solid understanding of the law and judicial processes in South Africa;
    • Able to work under pressure and to strict deadlines;
    • Good time management, the ability to multitask effectively and complete tasks timeously;
    • Sound news judgement;
    • Knowledge of the online news environment and digital publishing tools, including mobile video and photos;
    • Detail orientation;
    • Good people skills;
    • Quality orientation and the ability to deliver clean copy, and
    • Understanding of the SA Press Code and adherence to our code of ethics.

    Minimum Requirements: 

    • Relevant tertiary qualification;
    • At least 7 years’ journalism experience, some of it in reporting crime and courts;
    • Excellent general knowledge;
    • Insightful knowledge of the Western Cape’s judicial system;
    • Insightful knowledge of the major crimes affecting South Africa;
    • Insightful knowledge of the workings of the criminal justice system;
    • Strong knowledge of topical issues and current affairs;
    • Demonstrable network of contacts in law enforcement and/or the courts
    • Valid driver’s licence.

    Multimedia Journalist (Cape Town & Johannesburg)

    Role requirements and attributes:

    • Cultivate a diary with original story ideas daily
    • Pitch, develop, shoot and edit video and audio stories
    • Excellent English-language writing: you'll be expected to draft voiceover scripts, subtitles, headlines, and captions
    • Rich research and interviewing skills
    • An advanced-level understanding of the Adobe Creative Suite (Premiere, Photoshop & Audition)
    • Can present a strong showreel and portfolio showing news experience
    • Be able to work nights and weekends when required: occasional travel outside the province or the country may be required

    Skills that would be an advantage:

    • Experience in live-streaming
    • Experience in Adobe After Effects and motion graphic 
    • Ability to use Pro Tools

    Qualifications 

    • Relevant tertiary qualification in journalism/media studies.
    • At least 3 years’ experience in a digital news environment.
    • A valid driver's licence.
