    Senior Principal Engineer - Utilities & Infrastructure

    Job description

    PURPOSE OF THE ROLE:

    The role also provides direct output support to the SVP Engineering - International in the identification and adoption of relevant discipline strategy, provision of competent technical support to the operations, provision of governance/assurance and representation of AGAi on all utilities and infrastructure matters inclusive the interaction and benchmarking with the peers in the industry.

    ACCOUNTABILITIES:

    • All members of the International Operations division are required to understand and act in accordance with AngloGold Ashanti’s values and policies and generally to meet all relevant internal and external compliance obligations.
    • The role incumbent and manager will identify and review the specific compliance requirements of the role.

    Managerial & Health of Discipline Accountabilities

    • Modelling behaviour that is consistent with the AGA Safety Vision and Values, assisting in driving a culture where Safety is our first value, and providing support for incident/accident investigations where required
    • Provide input into the development of the Engineering Strategy and to serve as the discipline master to the regions in the role out of the Engineering strategy within the mining operations.
    • Input in the development and provision of coaching and support in the execution of the Engineering and Asset Management strategy and plans
    • Assist and support the operations in the identification of measures and the monitoring of KPI’s to ensure that the engineering function progresses and or complies with the expectations of the function.
    • Review and adapt/adopt group standards and procedures inclusive the development and management of compliance to regional specific standards and specifications
    • Managing the deployment of engineering technology in support of the group objectives.
    • Participation in assurance and audit reviews
    • Defect Elimination, Innovation and Continuous Improvement Accountabilities
    • Identify new technologies, systems and processes through technology scanning, development, innovation and industry knowledge sharing to address business opportunities
    • Identify and monitor improvement projects especially on key safety and other defect elimination opportunities and to ensure knowledge transfer and compliance across the group.
    • Lead the identification of performance measures to proactively identify emerging trends of both equipment and cost performance trends through analysis and benchmarking.
    • Identify value-adding cost saving and optimisation opportunities in collaboration with other stakeholders (Supply Chain, HRD, Safety etc.) in support of continuous improvement.
    • Identify, facilitate and lead as improvement turnarounds through steercos’ or communities of practice as the case may be.

    Provision of Utilities (Key inputs into Operations)

    • Using the company’s business planning process, develop both the long and short-term identification of the company’s Road, Power, Fuel, Water and other key resources requirements inclusive the development of appropriate strategies to ensure reliable and cost-effective provision of these services.
    • Accountable for the monitoring and reporting (and escalation of reporting if required) of compliance to the legislated and or company standards in terms of scare resources inclusive the management of close-outs of related audits
    • Develop and Implement programs to optimise the use of utilities and minimise the cost and as the case may be environmental, legal etc impacts associated with these services.
    • Co-responsible with the operational staff for employing a risk and opportunity based approach to the supply of utilities both on mine and off mine.
    • Providing for a technical single point of contact (Business Process Owner) for supply of utilities to the company.
    • Using the AGA Business Planning information, develop a long term off-site utility strategy aligned with National, Provincial/Regional and Local Municipality planning.
    • Provide advice regarding the selection of products and equipment and ECPMs for specific tasks and deployment of correctly skilled contractors for specific utility projects
    • Technical support, review and approval of all new projects apply fit-for-purpose designs in the utility supply
    • Prepare a monthly Utility performance report (consumption and cost performance) KPI’s to identify developing trends to present this to the VP Ops Support
    • Identify value-adding cost saving and optimisation opportunities in collaboration with other stakeholders (Supply Chain, HRD, Safety etc.) in support of continuous improvement.
    • Mentoring, assisting and guiding newly recruited engineers to enable them to execute their duties to the best of their abilities
    • In the capacity of “discipline master” establishing and nurturing sound and professional relationships with consultants, internal departments & project teams, service providers and suppliers and to maintain a network of suppliers, consultants and other expertise to provide second line maintenance support to the operations as required.
    • Lead and or set up power and water steercoms including both processing and mining departments to set and meet reduction objectives in conjunction with the environmental departments
    • Coordination, collaboration and Influencing Internal and External stakeholders around off-site Utility initiatives.

    Infrastructure (Distribution & transmission & Facilities across the operation)

    • To provide discipline mastery in terms of the company owned infrastructure in terms of
    • Power reticulation generally above 1000v backbone networks
    • Water storage and reticulation
    • Storm and Effluent water
    • Fire Water and centralised fire detection
    • Roads excluding haul roads
    • Rail infrastructure inclusive signaling
    • Fuel & lubes inclusive metering
    • Key Buildings and Amenities
    • Dewatering
    • Main UG Ventilation
    • To lead design, selection and maintenance and to further ensure that the integrity of these assets are managed so as to ensure services for the life of mine
    • To lead and ensure that all networks are modelled and that all changes to are simulated to avert overloading or interruptions/disruptions to production.
    • To ensure that appropriate capital justifications are in place to maintain the integrity of the facilities

    Services

    TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

    • Technical

    • The Senior Engineer – Asset Management & Systems provides the focal point for developing a systemic and sustainable approach to maintenance excellence. The role serves as the internal business consultant who sets amongst others strategic systems and process for deployment by the operations and projects towards the objective of the management of equipment across the assets life cycle. To this end the role sets group standards, policies and procedures and together with the VP- Operations Support ensures adherence to these by the operations.

    • Responsible for the development and regular review of the company’s Asset Management Strategy and Improvement Plans, adhering to the Asset Management Framework and including a deliberate campaign on Defect Elimination, Work Management and optimising Maintenance Tactics. The role, as the discipline master, supports the SVP Engineering who is accountable for overall roll-out of the Asset Management Framework.
    • Accountable for the monitoring and reporting (and escalation of reporting if required) of compliance to the AM Framework, through monitoring of the progress on the AM Improvement Plan, management of close-outs of related audits and regular assessment of the AM maturity using an assessment.
    • Co-responsible for employing a risk based approach to set the Service (Maintenance) Strategy for equipment, by assessing the criticality of equipment types. Accountable for maintaining a group level Asset Criticality Register
    • Providing for a single point of contact (business Process Owner) for key Asset Management software inclusive Tactic Development, DE and CMMS (SAP) and other work management and tracking systems support to maintenance teams.
    • Co-responsible for developing and regular reviewing of the Service Strategy (Maintenance Tactics) for project operational readiness work.
    • Accountable for managing a group wide reliability incident reporting system inclusive leading key root cause assessments.
    • Support the Discipline to lead adhoc Analyse and Improve initiatives with the view to identification of common cause events and elimination of such. Accountable for issue investigations, including the setting up of control charts, histograms and jackknifes to support such hypothesis, as well as development of control actions and progress review of their implementation.
    • Support the VP Ops Support to lead a 5 S process across the operation to ensure disciplined execution of engineering work in inspiring environment.
    • Prepare a monthly Asset Management performance report (equipment performance, work management, reliability incidents KPI’s to identify developing trends to present this to the Head of Engineering)
    • Identify value-adding cost saving and optimisation opportunities in collaboration with other stakeholders (Supply Chain, HRD, Safety etc.) in support of continuous improvement.
    • Provide direct support to the Operational Senior Engineers to ensure the availability of data to support equipment performance and improvement initiatives
    • Providing assurance and governance to the management teams regarding the overall state and health of the Asset Management engineering function
    • Accountable, with the SVP And VP Engineering/Ops Support, for the asset management talent development process within the mining and process operations with specific focus on the development and succession planning for professional level employees
    • Mentoring, assisting and guiding newly recruited engineers to enable them to execute their duties to the best of their abilities
