Job Summary
As a Senior Design Engineer, you will be a part of the Robotics and Motion (RM) Division and Motors and Generators Business Unit (BU), based in Alrode. ABB’s Robotics and Motion (RM) division offers a wide range of products and services including drives, motors, generators and robots. Key applications include energy conversion, actuation, automation, standardized manufacturing cells for applications such as machine tending, welding, cutting, painting, finishing, palletizing and packing and engineered systems for the automotive industry.
Tasks
As a Senior Design Engineer, you will be responsible to create, modify and analyze the design of electric motors and generator equipment, systems or installations, including specifications for manufacturing, fabrication or construction on assignments of medium to high complexity using established solutions. Your tasks as a Senior Design Engineer will include the following:
Technical Contribution:
- Ensure creation of customized designs with high priority on identification and control of hazards.
- Contribute to design reviews and verification following established QA/QC process, provide feedback on design aspects and make necessary modifications 3.Reverse engineer and optimize designs to meet updated standards, incorporating new products, components and functionalities
- Confirm design and component capabilities by implementing standard, developing testing methods and testing properties 5.Create or review engineering drawings, specifications and plans required by manufacturing, fabrication or construction
Customer and Sales:
- Study customer requirements to ensure sales tender and production compliance thereto
- Interact with customers and provide technical guidance on design related queries
- Provide engineering information by answering questions and requests
- Present ABB as a professional organization in all interactions with the customer
Contract Management:
Identify and implement variation requests to support contract claims
ake contractual oversight of work within own area of responsibility, hold regular progress reviews, identify and manage contract risks
Planning and Control:
Create work plans and cost estimates for work in one’s area of responsibility and ensure quality deliverables on time and at targeted cost
Risk and Opportunity Management:
- Complete risk and opportunity assessments and the implementation of resulting actions in one’s area of responsibility
- Report any contract/quality/program/cost issues to management, along with recommendations, for resolution 3.Contribute to creation and implementation of strategies and plans to ensure that that Engineering teams are able to satisfy the current and future needs of the business
Technical Leadership and Knowledge Sharing
- Gather and share best practice and learning both from inside and outside the Business Unit 2.Be a member of and participate in work of industry associations
- Share knowledge and experience across own business unit and beyond 4.Attend project meetings and present specific aspects of project design assignments
Processes and Tools:
- Initiate and drive continuous improvement activities

- Research and test manufacturing and assembly methods and materials
People Leadership and Development
Guide, motivate, coach, mentor and develop less experienced designers on the translation of conceptual designs to engineering documentation, including drawings and calculations
Supply Chain Management
Collaborate with the supply chain function, review vendor documentation, prepare RFQs, and provide design related evaluation of proposals for non-standard materials and equipment
Requirements
- Ideally, you must have an Electrical Engineering Degree (NQF Level 7) and Professional Registration coupled with minimum 3 to 4 years of related experience.
- You should be well versed designing new motor electrical designs using available designing tools.
- Candidates with expertise in root-cause analysis, rotating electric machinery testing/troubleshooting and results/information analysis, report writing and presentation skills will be an ideal for this role.
