    Junior Financial Advisor

    Job Description

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Prepare and be responsible for financial models, financial analysis, valuation and risk analysis of new projects (with assistance / supervision of senior members of the team as appropriate). Assist with preparation of financing plans, selection of funding sources / banks, the structuring and execution of project financings. The geographical coverage is mainly South Africa but also other Sub-Saharan African countries.
    • Responsible for preparation of financial models / financial analyses or reviewing and/or audit financial models / financial analyses of financial models prepared by other team members.
    • Responsible for the valuation of development projects.
    • Responsible for analysis of financial (or financing related) risks and impact of proposed transactions on accounting.
    • Assist with the structuring and execution of financing plans for new projects.
    • Responsible for preparing or assisting with financing, accounting and tax related inputs in financial models (where required with the support of relevant expertise centres and/or external consultants).
    • Assist with the preparation of appropriate equity funding structures, including when relevant for partners.
    • Assist with the selection of banks / financing institutions and/or agencies.
    • Assist business development decision making process.
    • Assist with analysis on risk allocation, bankability issues, optimization & tax structuring.
    • KPI’s
    • Prepare financial models (or other deliverables, including internal approval papers, documents for external parties etc) within the timeframe agreed with BD colleagues / senior members of the team (e.g. bid deadlines etc.).

    Degree / Experience

    • Accounting / Finance / Actuarial Science / Economics based degree or a professional qualification such as CFA, CIMA, ACA, ACCA (or equivalent) or other (engineering degree);
    • Relevant experience (preferably within a sponsor project finance team or within a bank, financial advisory firm and/or accounting/fiscal advisory firm) is preferred;
    • Experience in planning and managing processes;
    • Experience in financial modelling and up-to-date proficiency in excel (including writing basic Macros) is essential to the role;
    • Experience of project financing for power projects in RSA (e.g. having worked on a REIPPP bid and/or financing) or in any other country in Africa would be a valuable asset for the role but not essential.

    Specific Knowledge / skills

    • Strong and proven analytical skills, including proficient financial modelling;
    • Commercial acumen with good understanding of accounting topics and tax structures;
    • Planning ability, capacity to deliver on plans and to work independently;
    • Leadership qualities advantageous, strong self-motivation a must;
    • Able and willing to learn on the job and to share experiences across the team;
    • Presence and interpersonal credibility advantageous;
    • Ability to multitask and to work effectively under pressure;
    • Strong communication skills (including adequate knowledge of PowerPoint®);
    • Behavioural capabilities: problem solving, strong interpersonal skills, common sense and sense of humour;
    • Fluency in English is mandatory;
    • Knowledge of French would be an asset but is not essential.

    Business Understanding

    • Good understanding of the power business and the IPP model;
    • Good understanding of the renewable power industry would be a valuable asset;
    • Basic understanding of contractual structure of a typical contracted-output IPP would be an asset.


    Some travel to other countries within Sub-Saharan Africa and occasional travel outside region.
