    Academic Director

    Job Description

    • CIEE is seeking to appoint an established scholar who is also a gifted teacher and communicator to the position of Academic Director of its Global Institute in Cape Town. The Academic Director oversees the coordination, quality, and planning of all courses and educational programming year-round for the CIEE Global Institute. More generally, it is the job of the Academic Director to provide intellectual leadership and to ensure a rigorous, engaging and supportive learning environment.

Candidates should be in possession of a PhD, or should be close to completion. They should have experience of teaching in a university environment, and should be student focused in their approach. Research track record is an advantage, as is an insider understanding of the academic and administrative operations of the University of Cape Town. Knowledge and experience of the world of study abroad is an advantage, as is comparative experience of US higher education. Candidates need to be highly organized in their approach, and to be excellent time managers, able to function within a complex administrative environment. As part of her or his duties, the Academic Director will recruit and oversee a pool of adjunct faculty, some of them senior scholars of standing. Candidates need to have the confidence, experience and soundness of judgement to provide effective leadership in such contexts. Most of all, candidates need to be enthusiastic about working with and giving time to our students, and should see themselves as educators and as motivators.

All of this adds up to a rare combination of skills, experience and abilities. If you believe that you tick all the boxes, we would like to hear from you. Please email a cover letter and CV to [email protected][CN1] [Office2] by 3 May 2017. Your cover letter should give a succinct, single-paragraph summary of your qualifications and experience, and should say why you would make an excellent candidate for this position. You should also say: if you were to prescribe a single book on South Africa to incoming students, what would it be? We will contact those candidates who we would like to meet with to further discuss this exciting opportunity. Due to high volume we are unable to respond personally to each candidate. No phone calls, please.
