    Building Engineering Leader

    Job description

    The role primarily focuses on leading the Johannesburg Building Engineering Group.

    The Group Includes Teams In The Following Disciplines

    • Structural Engineering
    • Building Civils
    • Building Services

    The role is accountable for ensuring technical excellence and integrity of the work delivered from these Johannesburg teams. The role is accountable to foster an environment within which business can be developed in Johannesburg by the support and empowerment of the respective team leaders. The role is also to ensure that these teams collaborate together as a cohesive and integrated team with a common interest in the success of the building engineering group in Johannesburg and Building Engineering in South Africa. The leader will also be responsible for staff welfare and development within the team and will liaise with the overall Buildings leader in Johannesburg in relation to general office matters that impact the team. This is a part time role whereby the incumbent will be expected to operate in another leadership capacity within the business such as the leadership of one of the discipline teams.

    Strategy

    • Facilitate the development of a business development plan for the Building Engineering team in Johannesburg and ensure that this is consistent with the sub-regional building engineering strategy.
    • Use the plan to guide the activities of the Building Engineering Johannesburg Team.
    • Keep abreast of market developments and help the team to adjust existing services or develop new services in response.
    • Assess opportunities for expansion of services and development of new skills.
    • Convey a compelling strategy and clear direction for the Johannesburg building engineering team to the staff.
    • Provide cohesion between the Johannesburg Building Engineering discipline teams

    Quality of work

    • Promote, encourage and inspire all staff to strive for excellence in their work.
    • Foster exceptional quality of work in the building engineering team.
    • Oversee and encourage a mature approach to risk within the team including project selection.
    • Champion the use of the full suite of Arup Management Systems.
    • Provide a working environment whereby professional development is encouraged and staff are given access to learning and development.
    • Ensure that both staff development and career development are given appropriate priority.
    • Assist the team in allocating and developing their resources strategically and tactically.
    • Ensure that appropriately qualified and experienced PMs and PDs are assigned to projects.
    • Ensure that all staff are reviewed regularly and given appropriate feedback.
    • Oversee recruitment of staff in the team to meet the current and future business needs and to achieve the business plan.

    Business Development

    • Maintain relationships with key clients and emphasise client focus across the teams.
    • Develop a positive industry profile for the team.
    • Contribute strategically to select the bids and projects –project director roles, reviews, post mortems, client meetings, team meetings
    • Actively investigate opportunities to win work and grow the Building Engineering and wider Buildings & Cities business in Johannesburg.
    • Solicit feedback from clients and action accordingly.
    • Achieve a positive client satisfaction ratings for the team.

    Operations

    • Work with other Building Engineering and Buildings Leaders to establish a medium for sharing information, resourcing etc, across the Buildings Sector.
    • Be a valuable, active member of the Buildings South Africa leadership Group.
    • Be accountable to the Johannesburg Buildings Leader and the South Africa Buildings Leader in the performance of the role as described here.
    • Be accountable to the South Africa Buildings commercial Director for the commercial performance of the Building Engineering Johannesburg sub-unit.

    Commercial

    • Ensure that the various discipline team leaders and project directors in Johannesburg are managing their projects well commercially
    • Ensure that support is given to the buildings SA commercial leader in respect of timely reporting of busyness and regular invoicing, cash collection and pff updating on Johannesburg based building engineering projects.
    • Ensure that go no go and bid review meetings are carried out for all Johannesburg based building engineering projects.
    • Ensure that regular commercial reviews are carried out on Johannesburg based building engineering projects.
    • Ensure that Johannesburg is represented at the monthly financial review meetings chaired by the buildings SA commercial lead.

    Relationships

    The position requires the following types of key relationships:
    High level, strategic relationships with clients, industry peer groups, within the region, specifically with Johannesburg and the wider Gauteng province.
    Effective personal relationships with:

    • Buildings Leadership across the sub-region
    • Cost centre leaders in other Sectors within the sub-Region.
    • Sub-Regional Business Leaders
    • Sub-Regional Skills Network Leaders
    • Sub-Regional Business Support Group Leaders

    Skills And Experience

    • Relevant engineering degree in an appropriate area
    • Professionally Registered in a relevant engineering discipline
    • International working experience in leading the design and delivery of complex property developments.
    • A minimum of 15 years recognisable post-qualification experience in Engineering

    Key experience

    • Substantial knowledge and experience in a relevant area of Building Engineering
    • Substantial knowledge and understanding of technology led Building Engineering projects.
    • Substantial experience in leading key projects, including the management of multidisciplinary project teams and the management of professional teams.
    • Proven experience in leading and developing the skills, capabilities and diversity of large multi-disciplinary teams.
    • Proven successful commercial, operational and business capability.

    • Excellent interpersonal skills across all levels , both internally and externally to Arup including:
    • An ability to represent the organisation within the industry.
    • Keen sense of maintaining high ethical and professional standards
    • Strong leadership skills with the ability to motivate individuals to work collaboratively within a team

    • The person must be target and deadline driven to ensure project is delivered effectively to the satisfaction of the client
