    Summary

    The Highways and Bridges Practice is a key element of the Transportation and Logistics Business Unit within the Africa, Europe & Middle East (AEM) region for Hatch. With a number of large scale projects for Roads Authority Clients currently underway in Cape Town, this forms the largest percentage of income for that office. In addition to its current standing, this practice is recognized as being one of the key growth areas for Hatch in the Western Cape Region. The Practice is supported by an Engineering group, primarily responsible for the execution and delivery of a range of Roads Projects in that region.

    The successful candidate will be responsible for Geometric Design on a range of projects, including Urban Arterials, Rural Roads and Freeways as well as supporting business development initiatives for the office.

    Key Responsibilities

    Take responsibility for Geometric Design on a variety of roads projects in the Cape Town office:

    • Work with the local Roads Lead to ensure adherence to Client standards,
    • Apply best practice,
    • Take responsibility at a technical level for own work.
    • Develop and nurture deep expertise in practice area within the office
    • Maintain regular career development
    • Proactively share expertise with others on the team
    • Create catalogue of knowledge and expertise for easy access
    • Ensure compliance with company policies and procedures
    • Support the Highways and Bridges Practice in new business development and marketing initiatives
    • Preparation of details, specifications, and bidding documents
    • Preparation of technical reports for projects
    • Project related client contact
    • Project Management
    • Client liaison duties
    • Work to ensure the implementation of safety and integrity principles in structural documentation
    • Carry out assigned tasks within budget and schedule
    • Review and evaluate technical work

    Essential

    Qualifications and Experience

    • A recognized degree or diploma in civil engineering from an accredited university or technicon
    • Professional Engineer or Technologist registered with the Engineering Council of South Africa, or in the process of registering
    • At least five years’ experience in the geometric design of roads for Provincial and National Roads Authorities and 10 years project civil engineering experience.
    • A thorough working knowledge of the following design software:
      • AutoCad Civil 3D
      • iDas
    • Ability to attain quality, cost and schedule objectives
    • Sound understanding of design engineering codes and technical standards
    • Good communication and interpersonal skills
    • Good planning and organizational skills
    • Ability to function with minimal supervision
    • Good safety awareness
    • Must have a good knowledge of the South African design codes

    Additional

    A thorough working knowledge of the following design software:

    • InRoads (Bentley)
    • Microstation
