    The Senior Maintenance Technician is a mid-level role in the Technical Maintenance job family. The primary purpose of the Senior Maintenance Technician is to ensure the effective functioning of ICT infrastructure at clients’ sites by installing, configuring and maintaining equipment, systems and/or networks. They repair defects and provide site maintenance in accordance with Dimension Data’s standards, procedures, directives, work practices, guidelines, policies and service level agreements.

    What you'll be doing

    • Safeguard client infrastructure
      • The Senior Maintenance Technician identifies weak spots in the client’s equipment, systems or networks which pose a high risk. They monitor and protect these weak spots until it can be rectified, which may include limiting access to the high risk area by cutting over cables and/or new joints. This employee ensures the shortest timelines between temporary and permanent repairs are maintained.
    • Territory management
      • The Senior Maintenance Technician ensures that all breaks in their designated areas are resolved within set SLA’s. They and perform routine maintenance on equipment, systems or networks including cleaning, numbering and slack management and also perform weekly route patrols.
    • Project management
      • The Senior Maintenance Technician takes responsibility for installations, site maintenance, site performance and expansion projects. He/she develops a maintenance plan for the region, identifying the risk areas and developing action plans to manage the risks. He/she develops and ensures approved processes and accepted best practices are implemented and adhered to in the maintenance environment. They ensure standards and procedures exist and are adhered to in the maintenance departments and ensure proper labour relations are upheld.
    • Ensure safety, health, environment and quality compliance
      • This individual ensures a safe work environment by complying with the requirements of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and statutory appointments by conforming to general machinery, general administration, general safety, environmental and driven machinery regulations. The Senior Maintenance Technician is responsible for creating a safe work environment and resources and ensuring the OHSA is adhered to at all times.

    Behavioural skills

    The Senior Maintenance Technician has an excellent technical background with the ability to coach and mentor more junior team members. They have excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to build sound relationships with a variety of stakeholders.

    What would make you a good fit for this role?

    The Technician must be suitably qualified and be in possession of a Wireman’s license
    Be responsible for the first line of response in the event of an alarm and will liaise with the relevant designated service provider if required to fix any problem. This response is to be provided on a 24/7 basis. In the event of a call-out, standby and overtime will be required. On-Site response time will be immediate. After Hours and Standby will be within 45 Minutes of receipt of notification via SMS or telephonically.
    All activities to be communicated to and approved by the Data Centre Manager.
    Technician to provide onsite supervision of relevant contractors and maintain contractors site visit reports
    The Technician will action and complete assigned job orders as required and ensure that all systems are updated.

    • Plant rooms and LV Boards
      • Check all plant rooms for any visual defects or damage
      • Check equipment housed within the plant room i.e. generators, DB’s, UPS’s, Air-conditioning equipment, chillers, fire detection, Gas fire suppression systems, ventilation, etc.
      • Ensure plant is clean and free of debris at all times and that floor surfaces are not slippery
      • Check for adequate lighting and safety and emergency lighting
      • Record relevant readings on daily, weekly and monthly checklist
      • Respond to all power failures and related alarms
      • Ensure implementation of preventative maintenance as per predetermined schedules
      • Manage maintenance contractors
    • Generators
      • Daily check on all plant rooms for any visible defects or damage
      • Check radiators
      • Check condition of starter batteries
      • Check for any leaks
      • Check diesel levels and report readings to management
      • Monthly off load run of generators and capture of relevant readings /data
      • Quarterly on load test of generators and capture of relevant readings /data
      • Ensure implementation of preventative maintenance as per predetermined schedules
      • Manage maintenance contractors
      • Respond to all generator alarms
    • UPS
      • Daily visual check of all UPS’s
      • Record all relevant data
      • Ensure implementation of preventative maintenance as per predetermined schedules
      • Respond to all UPS alarms
      • Manage maintenance contractors
    • HVAC
      • Visually check all Data Centre HVAC equipment i.e. Chillers, Cooling Towers, AHU, Uniflair units, ventilation, etc.
      • Respond to relevant alarms
      • Manage maintenance contractors
      • Ensure implementation of preventative maintenance as per predetermined schedules
      • Monitor temperatures in Data Centre
    • Fire Detection and Suppression
      • Check all fire systems and components to ensure reliability
      • Manage maintenance contractors
      • Ensure implementation of preventative maintenance as per predetermined schedules
      • Respond to relevant alarms
      • Enable/disable fire detection as required during maintenance work
    • BMS (Building Management System)
      • Daily check of the BMS
      • Manage maintenance contractors
      • Ensure implementation of preventative maintenance as per predetermined sche dules
      • Respond to relevant alarms
      • Enable/disable alarms as required during maintenance work
    • Data Centre
      • Connect or disconnect computer equipment as required
      • Installation of fibre, copper and coax cabling as required
      • Installation of routers, switches and servers as required
      • Keep inventory of all stock and report to Data Centre Manager
      • Ensure a clean working environment
      • Check all building related maintenance i.e. lights, doors, door closers, floor tiles, paint, plumbing and log calls
      • Enforce and ensure that Health and Safety standards are adhered to
