The Academic Development Centre (ADC) strives to provide theoretically based and practical interventions and developmental opportunities to both Academic staff and students. The units within the ADC consists of a number of areas of functional expertise including Academic Development & Innovations (ADI) and Access programmes. All student related services are equally but proportionally represented on all four UJ campuses and the ADC staff strive to provide integrated, relevant and up-to-date growth opportunities. The Academic Development Innovations wing of the ADC offers extensive student learning programmes (MAPS, Mentoring programmes, study skills, academic counselling etc), as well as language and literacies development interventions [writing centres, languages courses imbedded in respective disciplines: Writing-In-the Discipline (WID) and writing-Across-the Curriculum (WAC,)] within faculties and other segments of university (English language course for international students' proficiency). A significant focus of the teaching and learning in the ADI wing is the utilisation of academic development teaching methodologies and strategies.

Responsibilities:

Coordinate the Reading in the discipline Portfolio Learning Development:

• You will design, facilitate and rollout a variety of Learning Development strategies focusing on UJ amongst others reading development as part of Reading In the Discipline (RID).
• You will develop materials LD offerings and online course contents (study skills, time management, exam writing skills, literacy related skills etc.) for Undergraduate students.
• You will be involved in teaching, and implementing the reading development strategy and learning development workshops designed for UJ Undergraduate students within the Senior Student Experience (SSE) and First Year Experience (FYE) context
• You will train and manage student mentors, and be involved in staff development as required by the HOD.
• You will help manage a short course/learning programme run by ADI.
• You will initiate and strengthen relationships with various Faculty representatives, liaise with internal and external Stakeholders and contribute towards the SSE agenda.
• You will be expected to integrate study skills into discipline based and create course content materials in a subject driven approach.
• You will be expected to undertake learning development related research and keep up-to-date learning development best practice.
• You will be expected to initiate, coordinate, and implement the UJ reading in the discipline strategy in various Faculties.
• Strengthen the online presence of the reading and learning development.
• Any other relevant duties as required by the HOD.

Minimum Requirements

• A Honours Degree in Education, Linguistics or a related field
• Two years' teaching experience within a Higher Education environment/ TVET College
• Strong materials development experience
• A sound knowledge of academic skills development theory and practice
• A sound understanding of issues faced by students entering Higher Education in South Africa
• Proof of conducting research in the field of learning development or Academic Development.

Competencies and Behavioural Attributes:

• Excellent communication skills
• The ability to work with both students and staff
• The ability to work as a member of a team
• Possess reading and writing experience at Higher Education/ TVET college

Recommendations:

• A Masters or PhD Degree in Education, Linguistics or a related field
• Knowledge of the field of academic literacies
• A proven record of research publications
• Good organisational, interpersonal and communication skills.
