    Chemical Process Engineer

    Job Description and Position details

    The Chemical Process Engineer is responsible for production support through innovation, leadership, regulatory compliance, project management, and maintenance support.

    This role includes research and study of operations to develop new strategies, procedures, or equipment designs to achieve business objectives.

    The Chemical process engineer will be responsible for project execution from conception to completion and will share responsibility for design, configuration, integration, and implementation of process control solutions for the plant production processes.

    The individual in this role will also be responsible for assisting the maintenance supervisor in minimizing costs and downtime through the development of standards and focus on mechanical integrity.

    Finally, this role will place a priority on safety and compliance with all applicable requirements and provide leadership for Process Safety Management.

    Job Requirements and Responsibilities

    • Carry out technical studies and make recommendations for improvements which will increase productivity or equipment performance;
    • Undertake Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) work;
    • Take part in risk assessments, HAZOP’s study work, and plan modifications or equipment;
    • Provide technical support to on-site personnel;
    • Technical direction, advice, and control of the process work;
    • Develop, review, and take responsibility for the accuracy of detailed calculations, process engineering data sheets, and drawings to specify the process engineering requirements of our projects;
    • Review and audit process engineering activity on projects;
    • Assisting Lead Project Engineers in the definition of the Process engineering work in any project, design approach, and criteria, procedures for engineering work and timely production of deliverables;
    • Ensure company Health, Safety, Environmental and Quality procedures are followed and that a high standard of safety is achieved in all associated work;
    • Adhere to ISO standards implemented;
    • Preparing engineering documents, desktop studies, and reports;
    • Carrying out project management duties when required;
    • Develop best practices, routines and innovative solutions to improve production rates and quality of output;
    • Provide engineering support for capital project development and construction;
    • Research and Development;
    • Assist with financial projections; and
    • Balance commercial and technical risk using acquired commercial acumen.

    Qualifications and Desired Characteristics

    • Chemical Engineering degree is essential;
    • Demonstrable expertise of at least 2 years and above in refining, chemicals, oil and gas and/or LNG gained through project execution with a major multi-national contractor;
    • Proven process engineering design experience;
    • Fluency in English and Afrikaans (written and spoken);
    • Project execution experience ranging from feasibility studies, to basic and detailed engineering;
    • Design Construct and Commissioning experience;
    • Problem-solving and lateral thought process-orientated;
    • Ability to develop and foster collaborative and mutually beneficial relationships;
    • Delivery focused and quality and systems driven;
    • A demonstrated understanding of process modelling software;
    • Integral team player; and
    • Excellent communication skills.

    Professional Registration

    • Registered with Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA);
    • Institute of Chemical Engineers (IChemE); and
    • South African Institute of Chemical Engineers (SAIChE).
