Role Description

The successful candidate will work with a team of engineers, developing a backend for a global player in the video-on-demand service and will be responsible for the day-to-day development of new features across all company applications (React.js, iOS, Android, Connected Devices), ensuring that apps are delivered on time, within budget and meeting quality specifications and goals set out by the business and expected by customers. The software development engineer will work in a small squad with an architect, planning sprints and prioritising new features and bug fixes. In addition, the software development engineer will use their knowledge and professional experience to influence technical decisions regarding a domain of expertise. This role reports to the technical director and the ideal candidate has a demonstrated ability to use common industry tools for software development, including but not limited to IDEs, build and continuous integration, source control management, code review tools, data storage services, and cloud infrastructure as well as be able to build software in a professional team environment delivered to production using these tools.

Salary

• R60,000 – R90,000 (based on skills and experience)

Responsibilities

• Take documented designs prepared by more experienced engineers and contribute code to implement the design working solo or with other engineers together
• Provide technical documentation describing your contributions and contribute enhancements to the team’s best practices
• Work with Javascript and NoSQL
• Ship highly scalable backends
• Play a leading role in design as well as develop major functional changes to existing software systems, or new ones, involving other engineers
• Work with multiple stakeholders (internal and external) with different goals, objectives and aspirations
• Work in an agile environment
• Build dynamic customer-facing RESTful and GraphQL APIs
• Build modular micro-services, or migrating a monolithic backend to a modular architecture

Requirements

• Minimum 5 years of experience
• Strong proficiency in JavaScript and the JavaScript object model
• Thorough understanding of Node.js and its core principles
• Solid understanding of GraphQL
• Familiarity with RESTful APIs
• Knowledge of modern authorization mechanisms, such as JSON Web Token
• Familiarity with modern front-end build pipelines and tools etc.
• Ability to understand business requirements and translate them into technical requirements
• A knack for benchmarking and optimization
• Familiarity with code versioning tools (such as Git, SVN, and Mercurial)
• Knowledge of development best practices, including coding guidelines
• Good understanding of vanilla JavaScript and have experience with unit tests
