Clerk of Works - Underground Mining at Tharisa

Role Context

Operational Tasks:

Compliance and Governance 

Verify that all underground mining activities comply with: 

• Approved mine designs and layouts 
• Contract Scope of Work, specifications, and standards 
• Applicable legal and regulatory requirements (e.g., MHSA) 
• Monitor adherence to mining methods, sequencing, and technical requirements 

Quality Assurance and Control 

Conduct regular underground inspections to confirm: 

• Work quality meets required standards 
• Installed support and infrastructure comply with specifications 
• Identify and document non-conformances 
• Monitor implementation and close-out of corrective actions 
• Verify completion against defined inspection and quality control points 

Progress Verification 

Monitor contractor progress against: 

• Approved development and production schedules 
• Planned advance rates and milestones 
• Independently verify reported production and development outputs 
• Identify deviations and escalate risks to schedule or deliverables 

Reporting and Documentation

Prepare and maintain: 

• Daily and weekly inspection reports 
• Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs) 
• Progress verification reports 
• Risk and issue escalation logs 
• Ensure accurate and auditable records of contractor performance 

Stakeholder Relations

• Serve as the Employer’s representative underground for oversight purposes 
• Facilitate communication between Contractor execution teams and Employer stakeholders
• Build and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders to ensure information, advice or opinions on relevant matters is made available and/or communicated with all relevant stakeholders, to manage expectations and timelines.

Risk, Safety and Compliance:

Observe and verify contractor compliance with: 

• Approved risk assessments 
• Codes of Practice and Standard Operating Procedures 
• Identify and report unsafe conditions or practices 
• Exercise authority to stop unsafe work in line with legal obligations 
• Escalate critical safety concerns to Employer and Contractor management 

Requirements

Qualifications:

• Grade 12 (NQF4)
• Valid Mine Overseer Certificate of Competency
• National Diploma or equivalent in Mining

Job-specific experience:

• Minimum 10 years’ experience in underground mining operations as a Mine Overseer
• Demonstrated experience in Underground development and mining methods, ground support systems and quality control
• Contract or project-based mining environment experience
• Experience/Exposure on MS Dynamics F&O, Reporting tools: MS Power BI
