    Clinical Nurse (R/N) - Anaesthetics - Cath Lab

    Job Summary

    • The Professional Scrub Nurse/Clinical Nurse is a professional who remains responsible for the assessment, planning and implementation of individualised, holistic, and person-centred nursing care of a patient, their families, or the community, either performed directly or indirectly.
    • The incumbent ultimately coordinates patient care within the concept of the multi-disciplinary health team.
    • The incumbent also fulfils the role using scientifically based nursing theories and processes, treating the patients as a physical, social, and spiritual individual, and by use of educational and technical means applicable to health care practice.
    • The Professional Nurse – recovery and anaesthetics will render and promote cost effective, safe quality patient care in accordance with hospital standards and policies.

    KEY WORK OUTPUT AND ACCOUNTABILITIES

    CONSISTENCY OF CARE

    Administration

    • Completion of Peri-operative document /CareOn to ensure compliance to Recovery Protocols and Procedures
    • Ensure all stock is well controlled, managed, and charged electronically on MoBit.
    • Management and issue/return of drugs according to Standard Operating procedure.
    • Ensure Scheduled 5 & 6 Medicines are ordered, checked and correct; done weekly.
    • Daily audit of emergency trolleys/and equipment as per assigned responsibilities.

    Research activities

    • Keep abreast of current research in the discipline

    Patient care

    • Practice patient care according to the Scope of Practice and assume total responsibility for these activities.
    • Contribute to the holistic care of patients.
    • Communicate effectively with hand over to ward staff, regarding post op Patients’ care and prescriptions on transfer to wards.
    • Practice principles of infection prevention and adhere to standard precautions re- protective equipment. Ensure correct procedures are followed when dealing with highly infectious patients (super bugs).
    • Promote and maintain good public relations with patients, relatives, and doctors.
    • Execute all procedures according to hospital standards/polices.
    • Refer all complaints from patients and doctors to the Unit Manager
    • Carry out all departmental duties as assigned by shift leader, assist, when necessary, in theatre.
    • Communicate with Health Care Practitioners / Anaesthetists regarding any change in the status of a patient in recovery.
    • Administer/ store and control of Scheduled medication in accordance with the Netcare policy.
    • Perform other duties as reasonably requested by the Unit Manager or senior member of staff.

    Quality assurance

    • Participate in theatre’s quality improvement programme.

    Safety awareness and risk management

    • Identify risks in the department, ensure effective risk prevention and management thereof.
    • Maintain a therapeutic, clean, and safe environment that is free from medico-legal hazards.
    • Adhere to the Netcare Resuscitation and Reanimation policy.
    • Adhere to Netcare medical waste management principles and all other waste management principles.
    • Maintain a safe working environment in accordance with the Machinery and Occupational Safety Act
    • Report and act upon potential/actual risks identified.
    • Responsible for ensuring correct use, cleaning, and storage of equipment.
    • Report equipment needing repair or replacement.
    • Always maintain professional conduct and standards in accordance with hospital policies and procedures.
    • Maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
    • Adhere to the bare below elbow principles i.e. no dangling earrings, necklaces, false nails, nail polish, wrist watches, one wedding band may be worn
    • No cell phones in theatres allowed.

    SKILLS PROFILE

    EDUCATION

    Essential

    • Registration with the South African Nursing Council as a Registered Nurse/ Midwife or equivalent NQF 7 qualifications.
    • Relevant qualification within a specialist area

    WORK EXPERIENCE

    Essential

    • Relevant experience in the nursing discipline in accordance with specific requirements
    • Capacity to implement and maintain standards of health practice required from all accredited bodies and appropriate health legislation
