    Computational Linguist

    Purpose of the position:

    •  To assist in the research and development of computer software products, and to develop resources relevant to human language technology

    Responsibilities:

    • Design, development and implementation of computer software
    • Resource development relevant to human language technology
    • Conduct research in the field of computational linguistics and natural language processing

    Minimum requirements:

    • A relevant Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Language Technology, Computer Linguistics, Computer Engineering, Computer System Development or another relevant degree (NQF 7).
    • Two years’ programming experience in at least one of the following languages: PERL, Python, R, C, C++, C# and Java
    • One years’ experience in natural language processing
    • One years’ experience in text processing, machine learning, and relevant software

    Other competency requirements:

    • One years’ experience in the use of several operating systems, including MS Windows and Linux
    • Computer literacy and the ability to easily master new software
    • Knowledge of other computer languages
    • The ability to prioritise, manage and complete several tasks (i.e. multitasking), and to work and excel under pressure
    • The ability to function as part of a team and adapt to its work method, and to work independently
    • Adequate ability to execute organisational coordination and creative problem-solving capabilities
    • Demonstration of language proficiency to function optimally in the various multilingual environments of the NWU
