    Editor (eNuus)

    Job Description

    • The Editor - Afrikaans News is responsible for driving the editorial vision, content quality, accuracy, and integrity of Afrikaans news output across all broadcast and digital platforms. The role provides strong editorial leadership, ensures compliance with broadcasting and journalistic standards, and enables the production of compelling, factual, balanced, and audience-relevant content. The Editor oversees daily news planning, story selection, script editing, production readiness, and live broadcast execution.

    Editorial Leadership & Decision-Making

    • Oversee editorial planning, news selection, story treatment, angles, and overall content direction for Afrikaans news bulletins.
    • Drive the editorial vision and ensure alignment with channel strategy and ensure all content meets editorial standards, accuracy, and balance.
    • Translate strategic goals into daily and long-term programming plans.
    • Lead editorial calls, assign stories, guide reporters, and set clear editorial expectations, ensuring all stories meet journalistic standards: accuracy, fairness, balance, impartiality, and ethical reporting.
    • Oversee editorial decision-making during breaking news and live events to ensure smooth broadcast execution.

    Content Planning & Production Oversight

    • Lead, oversee and assist in planning daily news agendas, bulletins, and editorial priorities.
    • Identify key stories, experts, analysts, and commentators for live segments.
    • Research, translate, and continuously monitor wire services and news feeds to identify and respond to breaking news, and write accurate and engaging Afrikaans news copy aligned to engaged, relevant and breaking news.
    • Develop and execute daily and long-term editorial and programming plans and drive coverage for major news events, special reports, and long-form stories.
    • Oversee and produce scripts, packages, headlines, visuals, graphics, and all production elements and technical elements are aligned for broadcast.
    • Final sign-off on editorial content before and during broadcast.
    • Ensure completion of broadcast checklists, editorial briefs, and show prep.

    Digital Integration & Multi-Platform Output

    • Guide digital adaptation of Afrikaans news content for web, social media, and mobile platforms.
    • Oversee headline writing, story summaries, and platform-specific storytelling.
    • Ensure content is optimised for digital engagement while maintaining editorial integrity.
    • Collaborate with digital teams for breaking news updates, video clipping, and distribution.

    On-Air Delivery (Anchoring)

    • Anchor live bulletins with professionalism, credibility, and strong editorial judgment.
    • Conduct live interviews, panel discussions, and breaking news coverage including ad-libbing and/or any on-air news delivery as required as well as post-show reviews to improve overall content quality.
    • Integrate visuals, overlays, and graphics to enhance viewer understanding.
    • Troubleshoot production challenges to maintain broadcast continuity and oversee end-to-end live broadcast execution with zero critical errors.
    • Manage real-time updates, breaking news, and last-minute changes.
    • Ensure bulletins meet required runtime, flow, tone, and production standards.
    • Uphold on-air quality, tone, pace, and compliance with regulatory requirements and eNuus/eNCA editorial policies.

    Stakeholder Engagement & Relationship Management

    • Maintain strong working relationships with internal and external stakeholders (producers, assignment desk, field crews, technical teams, marketing, and executives).
    • Represent the Afrikaans News desk in editorial planning meetings.
    • Collaborate with newsroom, technical teams, digital, field crews, and graphics.
    • Liaise with external experts, contributors, and service providers where relevant.
    • Ensure audience feedback is considered in editorial and content planning.
    • Ensure pre-planning meetings occur before each show, with key management updates shared with teams weekly.

    Quality Control, Compliance & Risk Management

    • Ensure compliance with BCCSA Code, ICASA regulations, POPIA, and internal editorial policies.
    • Conduct compliance checks to ensure all Afrikaans news content adheres to legal and broadcasting regulations.
    • Approve scripts, headlines, voiceovers, visuals, and final bulletin content ahead of broadcast.
    • Ensure corrections, clarifications, and editorial risks are managed promptly.
    • Enforce copyright, attribution, and ethical sourcing guidelines.
    • Manage reputational risks, sensitive content, and high-impact stories.
    • Maintain compliance with regulatory policies, editorial rules, and audit standards.

    Functional Planning and Performance (Editorial)

    • Produce well-researched, balanced, and engaging Afrikaans News content that aligns with editorial policies.
    • Translate strategic goals into daily and long-term programming plans.
    • Oversee editorial decision-making during breaking news and live events to ensure smooth broadcast execution.
    • Participate in editorial meetings and assist with running orders, scripts, and story selection to ensure cohesion across news operations.
    • Enhance storytelling with effective visual, graphic, and multimedia elements.
    • Ensure programming consistently supports audience growth and engagement targets through targeted programming strategies, measured by audience ratings and engagement metrics (e.g., viewership, social media interactions).
    • Facilitate seamless integration of on-air and digital content strategies.

    Team Leadership, Management & Facilitation

    • Coach, develop, and allocate resources to optimize team output.
    • Conduct performance management, feedback sessions, and skills development.
    • Ensure team roles, responsibilities, and expectations are clearly communicated and provide coaching, feedback, and editorial development to staff.
    • Participate in shift planning and ensure compliance with labour and company policies.
    • Build a high-performance culture anchored in accountability and collaboration.
    • Address performance concerns promptly with documented follow-ups.
    • Promote company values and maintain low staff turnover.

    Audience Engagement, Analytics & Performance Improvement

    • Analyse audience data, ratings, and feedback to drive content improvements.
    • Apply data insights to guest booking, editorial planning, and story selection.
    • Collaborate with digital teams to enhance reach, relevance, and engagement.
    • Track performance of segments, interviews, and special shows.
    • Implement quarterly improvements based on audience metrics and trends.
    • Support social media amplification of major interviews and guest appearances.
    • Continuously refine programming to increase market share and viewer loyalty.

    Personal Development

    • Keep personal skills, industry knowledge, and journalistic expertise updated.
    • Engage in continuous learning, complete development plans, and stay informed on current events.
    • Completing Individual Development Plan.
    • Attending a minimum of 2 learning and development courses bi-annually.
    • Participating in peer and team learning initiatives.
    • Complete bi-annual performance review and feedback.

    Budget, Resource & Compliance Management

    • Manage production resources effectively within budget constraints.
    • Ensure compliance with financial standards, work rules, and operational controls.

    • Track cost efficiency of programming and guest bookings.
    • Ensure operational targets and deadlines are met consistently.

    Job Requirements
    Qualifications

    • National Senior Certificate is Essential
    • Bachelors Degree in Journalism is Essential

    Experience

    • 8 years in Broadcast Journalism is Essential
    • 3 years Supervisory experience in Broadcast Journalism is Essential
