    Environmental Officer - North West

    Purpose of Role

    An Environmental Officer (EO) assist in the day- to -day running of the mine environmental management. Identifying and reviewing any potential environmental compliance issues arising from any environmental analysis and monitoring of key environmental indicators. The EO is regarded as an Environmental Control Officer (ECO) as required by the Department of Environmental Affairs and the Department of Water and Sanitation for the purpose of overseeing the control of the mining environmental management as far as water, waste, energy, emissions, biodiversity, land/soil, rehabilitation issues are concerned.

    Role Context

    • Ensuring regular site inspections and environmental sampling and analysis is carried out;
    • Preparation of environmental reports and tracking department performance against environmental key performances indicators and targets;
    • Assist in maintaining the ISO14001 standard by effectively monitoring key areas and conducting audits on a regular basis;
    • Maintain an effective administration system, ensuring that all environmental information is recorded and records maintained as per environmental system requirements.
    • To demonstrate flexibility;
    • Effectively work schedule to meet reporting and task completion deadlines;
    • Coordinating all aspects of pollution control, waste management, water management, greenhouse gas, recycling, conservation and renewable energy;
    • Leading the implementation of environmental policies and practices;
    • Ensuring compliance with environmental legislation and keeping up to date with SA and other applicable international regulations and legislations related to mining and Environmental management;
    • Coordinating public participations and consultations on environmental matters;
    • Writing environmental reports, assuming the lead responsibility with the company;
    • Raising awareness, at all levels of an organisation, of the impact of emerging environmental issues, whether legislative or best practice, on corporate, ethical, and social responsibility;
    • Carrying out impact assessments to identify, assess and reduce an organisation's environmental risks and financial costs;
    • Environmental Monitoring - through the use of computer modelling, digital mapping and Geographic Information Systems.
    • Carryout inspections, conduct investigations, resolve conflict, and take appropriate action;
    • Collect, analyze, and interpret data;
    • Review and assess reports/proposals, and make recommendations;
    • Prepare environmental reports;
    • Appraise pollution/contaminant treatment and control technologies, and provide related technical advice;
    • Conduct monitoring projects in support of studies, programs, and the development of guidelines and standards;
    • Identify, interpret, and advise on concerns and issues, and recommend alternatives for their mitigation and resolution.
    • Communicate effectively and represent the department with local government officials, external government agencies, industry representatives, consultants, non-governmental organizations, department staff, and the public;

    Requirements

    Qualifications:

    • Grade 12;
    • Tertiary bachelor's degree/\National Diploma in a relevant field (i.e., Environmental Science or Environmental Management);
    • Environmental short courses (i.e., ISO 14001 Management System, Environmental Law for Environmental Managers)

    Job specific experience:

    • 2– 3 years’ relevant experience in the Mining Industry;
    • Computer Literate.

    Inherent requirements

    Must be medically fit.
