Identify, commission, and assign news and current content based on strength, quality, depth, and newsworthiness in accordance with the public mandate and SABC News’ editorial and strategic objectives.
Take final responsibility for the editorial quality of the shows.
Account for overall audience performance of the programme.
Review and adjust programming to the changing needs of audiences.
Ensure that all programming adheres to the SABC Editorial Policies regarding the plurality of voices and diversity of views.
Make use of interactive screens, infographics, and audiovisual collages to enhance the quality of programming.
Ensure balance and fairness in the content and representation of multiple perspectives.
Ensure that shows are properly planned and well-thought out ahead of time.
Ensure that all interviews are published and prominently promoted on digital platforms ahead of transmission.
Create opportunities for viewer engagement during the programmme through digital platforms, call-ins and on-screen.
Plan and coordinate Outside Broadcasts, panel discussions and townhalls on issues of public concern in accordance with the public mandate.
Check and ensure that all audiovisual material meets all broadcast compliance requirements before transmission.
Liase with on-air team for final checks and ensure that the lineup is well understood by everyone involved in the transmission.
Authorise all major changes to the line up while on air.
Determine logical flow and co-ordination of the running order of the programme.
Optimise utilisation of resources and shared services in support of the production and delivery of quality programmes.
Provide feedback to the production team against set standards to enhance quality.
Ensure that all material meets the highest editorial and journalistic standards.
Research content to produce quality programmes for viewers and target audiences.
Cost effectively control and manage utilization of resources.
Manage and monitor timeous authorisation of freelance payments, in compliance with SABC policies.
Brainstorm and discuss story ideas, angles and sources with the team and contributors.
Support successful implementation of the Performance Management System in accordance with SABC policies.
Develop and manage staff rosters.
Adhere to the SABC editorial codes and Broadcasting Regulatory provisions.
Adhere to all SABC quality and production standards.
Provide input in the development of Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and monitor the implementation thereof.
Requirements:
Diploma/ Degree NQF6/7 preferably in Journalism/Media Studies/Communication or equivalent disciplines.
6 years’ proven experience in economic broadcast news and current affairs environment, including 3 years’ in an editorial/ supervisory position.
Understanding of broadcasting and publishing regulations and legislation.
Advanced understanding of public broadcasting principles.
Excellent command of both written and spoken language.
Exceptional writing skills, news sense attention to detail.
Advanced knowledge and understanding of platform-specific news and current affairs production processes and systems.
Planning, budgeting and executing special broadcasts and project.
