    Food Safety Manager

    About the job
    Summary:

    • Management of Operational Food Safety Programs and systems to ensure compliance against global, local and regulatory requirements applicable to operational food safety practices across banners.
    • To drive regulatory change management in supplier and operational food safety programs and applicable processes
    • To ensure the standardized implementation and management of all Food Safety policies and procedures as required by the  Global food safety program requirements and/or local requirements in a consistent manner. Management of all Food Safety Systems and data. Identification of Food Safety risks and effectively identify and mitigate these risks.
    • Advise Operational and Supplier Food Safety Managers of changes in policies and procedures and status on systems and outstanding requirements
    • Report on status of current Food Safety programs across all business divisions in relation to all Food Safety programs.
    • Identify areas of improvement and drive implementation.


    FUNCTIONS / RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Drive food safety compliance in relation to standards and controls

    • Draft standard process for implementation of new standards.
    • Ensure implementation of standards based on processes
    • Ensure maintenance and compliance to Food Safety policies and procedures (Global program and local requirements)
    • Understand local legislation and guide the business in the correct interpretation and application of all applicable food safety regulations, systems and processes across all African operation to ensure understanding and compliance
    • Assist the business in the identification of systems and technology priorities and ensure barriers that could negatively influence successful implementation are removed
    • Propose Food Safety process and system changes that would mitigate risk and ensure alignment to required standards
    • Consider all findings related to the Food Safety program and advice on possible enhancements to the policies, procedures and or systems
       

    Regulatory change management 

    • Formulate or implement regulatory affairs policies and procedures to ensure that regulatory compliance is maintained or enhanced.
    • Maintain current knowledge of relevant regulations, including proposed and final rules.
    • Keep abreast of new developments in legislation, guidelines, and regulations, interpret and cascade these locally (and globally) within the organization.
    • Regulatory engagement on new proposed regulations (comment on draft regulations)
    • Attend regulatory body meetings.
    • Draft plans for implementation of new regulations into business units
    • Draft plans for implementation of product specific changes required based on new regulations
    • Monitor implementation process
    • NPD involvement – regulatory compliance of new products
    • Keep product regulatory catalogue up to date (regulatory compliance per product category)

    Risk Mitigation and Risk Assessments

    • Monitor the implementation of the Food Safety procedures across all divisions and identify the associated risk and recommend suitable risk mitigation
    • Conducts audits and questionnaires to determine if policies and procedures are working effectively and consider corrective action plans (Quality Control)
    • Conduct annual risk assessment (Global program) to determine Food Safety Risks and design actions to mitigate these risks
    • Update policies and procedures accordingly and ensure effective communication is done
       

    Quality Assurance  

    •  Design a quality assurance process to measure the effective implementation of the policies and procedures in both the supplier food safety programs and operational food safety programs.
    • Report back on any findings and measure to improve on the current programs.
       

    Systems Management and Implementation

    • Ensure that all the Food Safety systems are running efficiently across all divisions through regular recording, reporting and communicating all deviation or exceptions raised in these systems
    • Ensure Massmart Food Safety systems and platforms are updated and compliant with Walmart requirements and drive the implementation of changes and enhancements where required
    • Ensure that monthly reports are consolidated and distributed to all stakeholders
       

    Design and provide Food Safety Training

    • Support in the development, implementation and validation of an effective risk based training program.
    • Present Food Safety training to relevant Massmart employees as required.
    • Manage and monitor the Food Safety training provided on all identified courses to ensure the target is reached. 
       

    Enhance Business Relationship

    • Develop analytics reports to be shared with key business stakeholders during monthly meetings and in quarterly Division Risk Committee packs
    • Conduct frequent meetings with key business stakeholders to get feedback, alignment, and drive improvement of program, specifically as relates to Food Safety Projects-SPARK, Pest Control, GFSMS, Diversey Audits etc.
    • Provide continuous feedback and updates to key business partners as necessary

    Food Safety Events

    • Co-coordinating role for events (World Food Safety Day, Recognition events, World Heath day) around activities and communication to business units. 
       

    Operational Food Safety Program Management

     

    • Management of Operational Food Safety Compliance – Food Safety management system, training, communication
    • Management of 3rd party audit (update guidance document)
    • Communication on operational food safety risks
    • Reporting on operational food safety compliance
    • Dispute management of audit findings (3rd party)
    • Design monitoring processes (Internal audit, CI, 3rd party)
    • Environmental testing management (program, corrective actions)
    • Management of operational fs systems (Corrective action tool, IMAP)
    • 3rd party management and engagement
       

    General

    • COE Attendance for Walmart working groups
    • Assisting the Food Safety SME with all day-to-day Food Safety Compliance area requirements.
    • Food Safety Project management
    • Any other food safety or quality related requirements as needed by the business.

    Requirements:

    • Minimum Academic, Professional Qualifications & Experience required for this position
    • Relevant B degree in Food Technology or related degree. Min 10 years related experience plus Business and commercial experience. Retail experience will be an advantage.
