    Gas Pipeline Controller (108107)

    Short Description / Purpose of Job

    • Responsible for doing inspections on Pipeline Operations network assets to prevent and minimise the risk of third-party intervention and subsequent damage to the gas pipeline network and other Pipeline Operations assets.

    Recruitment Description / Key Accountabilities

    • Conduct visual inspections on gas stations and pipeline related equipment
    • Clean gas stations from debris, trash and weeds.
    • Locating underground pipelines
    • Conduct site meetings for Sasol and NATREF
    • Issue permits and perform safe making duties
    • Perform safety standby duties when required
    • Perform weekend work when required
    • Be available to travel and stay away from home to Newcastle, Richards Bay and Mandeni areas when required
    • Conduct pipeline safety awareness
    • Report all unsafe conditions to line manager and load notifications
    • Examine equipment and complete safety checklist
    • Proficient with the use of general tools associated with the commissioning and decommissioning of gas stations and pipeline network
    • Load and unload tools and equipment from vehicle
    • Prepared to be working in an outdoor environment (in the vicinity of snakes and small wild animals
    • Complying with regulations / laws / procedures.
    • Strong focus on safe work practices.
    • Ability to work in a team environment.
    • Effective written and communication skills.
    • Respond to pipeline related emergencies
    • Operate pressure reduction and customer metering stations on the pipeline network
    • Inspect and operate the pigging receiver and launcher stations
    • Operate the valves on the gas/fuel pipeline network
    • Perform Cathodic Protection 24-hour recordings
    • Conduct housekeeping of stations and workshop
    • Perform planting and painting of route markers
    • Maintain pipeline routes for Sasol and NATREF
    • Conduct fault finding and incident investigations
    • Identify where gas, fuel and oil leaks are coming from
    • Be prepared to work in a confined space with the use of breathing apparatus.
    • Be prepared to work at heights.
    • Liaise with stakeholders (e.g. local communities, municipal representatives, emergency services)
    • Perform overtime, call out and be on standby when required
    • Prepared to work outdoors in extreme weather conditions (heat, cold, rain).
    • Manage allocated vehicle (cleanliness)
    • Be able to operate a 4X4 vehicle and/or be prepared to be trained therein.
    • Be prepared to drive off-road where required.
    • Manage allocated Sasol cell phone, tablet, GPS unit, gas detector and pipeline locating equipment.
    • Assist stakeholder management department when required
    • Be available to perform acting duties for foreman when required

    Formal Education

    • Grade 12 with Maths, Science and English or N3 Maths & Engineering Science (must)
    • Valid Code 08 or 10 drivers' license and ability to drive (must)

    Min Experience

    • Gas Pipeline Controller Gr2 – 1 year experience as Trainee Gas Pipeline Controller, Sasol Learner, Maintenance Operator/Assistant OR Process Controller
    • Gas Pipeline Controller Gr 1 – 2 year experience as Gas Pipeline Controller Gr 2 OR Process Controller

    PtW issuing competency

    • Safety Standby and Gas monitor experience

    OSH Act experience (wish)

    • Computer literacy
    • Basic hand tools
