Head: Campus Health & Wellness Centre (AD06) at University of the Witwatersrand

Main purpose: 

• The Division of Student Affairs is a central division responsible for advancing the student experience and providing the care, support and development that enable Wits students to thrive. The Campus Health & Wellness Centre (CHWC), one of five units within the Division, provides accessible, quality primary health care, psychiatric and emergency medical services, together with health promotion and wellness programmes across Wits campuses.
• CHWC is first and foremost a student-centred service. It works collaboratively with the Counselling and Careers Development Unit and other Student Affairs units, faculties, professional services and relevant institutional structures to support student wellbeing and success. As a key partner in implementing the Wits Mental Health Strategy, the Centre contributes to prevention, early intervention, health promotion and coordinated responses to student health and wellness concerns. It also builds partnerships with public health services, healthcare providers and other external stakeholders to strengthen an integrated, preventative and responsive support system for Wits students, while contributing its expertise to relevant institutional health and wellness priorities.
• The Head of Department provides strategic, clinical and operational leadership to CHWC. The role requires an experienced health-services leader able to ensure safe, ethical and high-quality care; lead a multidisciplinary team; manage complex resources and regulatory obligations; and position the Centre as a trusted partner in student wellbeing and success.

Brief Description        
Key Performance Areas:

• Provide strategic management and collaborative leadership to CHWC, aligning the Centre's goals, operational plans and services with the priorities of the University and the Division of Student Affairs. 
• Lead the planning, delivery, monitoring and evaluation of integrated primary health care, psychiatric and emergency medical services responsive to the needs of Wits students.
• Develop and implement operational policies, standard operating procedures, service standards and efficient workflows that promote accessible, student-centred and high-quality care.
• Ensure sound clinical governance, continuous quality improvement and compliance with applicable health legislation, professional and ethical standards, University policies and requirements governing medicines.
• Lead CHWC's contribution to health promotion, prevention, early intervention and emergency preparedness, and work with CCDU and other partners in implementing the Wits Mental Health Strategy.
• Lead, manage and develop the Centre's multidisciplinary staff, including performance management, staff development, effective teamwork and a professional, accountable and affirming work environment.Manage the Centre's financial, infrastructural, technical, human and material resources, including budgets, procurement, equipment, medicines, facilities and health and safety requirements.
• Build effective on- and off-campus partnerships; represent the University in relevant health forums; and lead projects, monitoring, evaluation and reporting across the Centre's responsibilities.

Minimum Requirements:

• BCur Ed. et Adm. (Honours degree in Nursing Education and Management).
• Post-basic Diploma in Clinical Nursing Science, Health Assessment, Treatment and Care (PHC).
• Diploma in Nursing (General, Psychiatry, Community) and Midwifery.
• Dispensing Practitioners Course.
• Current registration with the South African Nursing Council.
• At least five years' relevant experience within a university campus health environment.

Knowledge and experience:

• Demonstrated experience in health services management and the strategic and operational leadership of a multidisciplinary health service.
• Sound knowledge of healthcare legislation, professional and ethical standards, clinical governance, primary health care, psychiatric services, emergency medical services and campus health practice.
• Knowledge of legal and regulatory requirements governing the procurement, control, storage and use of medicines.
• Proven ability to lead and develop staff, manage performance and build effective teams within applicable employment-relations and University frameworks.
• Strong financial, budgeting, procurement, infrastructure and resource-management skills, with sound controls and accountability.
• Ability to lead emergency planning and response, problem-solving and decision-making in a complex institutional environment.
• Strong collaborative and stakeholder-engagement skills, including the ability to work across University structures and with external health partners.
• Good project-management, monitoring and evaluation, presentation, report-writing and computer skills.
