Grade 12. Appropriate qualification that allows registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Medical Specialist in Family Medicine.
Appropriate tertiary qualification in the Health Science (MBChB). Current registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Medical Specialist in the required discipline.
A Minimum of 3 (three) years appropriate experience as Medical Specialist after registration with the HPCSA as a medical specialist in Family Medicine.
A postgraduate qualification in Management will be an added advantage. Good communication skills (written and verbal) well as computer literacy. Must have strong record of clinical expertise and clinical governance, research and experience of training and teaching at both under and post graduate levels.
Strong people management skills, analytical thinking, problem solving, decision-making and ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team. Proof of current registration with the HPCSA 2026/2027.
Duties :
The Critical Care Department is based at Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital and affiliated with the Wits University of Johannesburg. This joint academic, full-time, permanent appointment requires the Head of Clinical Unit to provide leadership for critical care services across the hospital and academic platforms.
The role includes ensuring high-quality, evidence-based intensive care, strengthening clinical governance, improving patient outcomes, and ensuring adherence to national policies, safety standards, and ICU protocols.
The incumbent will coordinate and support teaching, training, and supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate students, including registrars rotating through ICU, and contribute to departmental research activities. Duties may include after-hours ICU cover, call duties, and other institutional responsibilities as required.
