MBChB or equivalent qualification. Registration with HPCSA as a specialist in Anaesthesiology or Internal Medicine.
Proof of registration with the HPCSA as a Subspecialist in Critical Care (Adult) or Pulmonology.
A minimum of 5 years appropriate experience working as a specialist in an adult Critical care Unit. Knowledge Skills Training and Competencies required at Subspecialist level. Good verbal and written communication skills. Ability to work in a team.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, TRAINING AND COMPETENCIES: Inherent requirement of the job: The successful incumbent will be required to perform commuted overtime in Critical Care Department.
Competencies (knowledge/skills): Excellent team player. Strong record of clinical expertise, clinical governance, research, teaching and training at under and postgraduate levels.
Excellent managerial, interpersonal, leadership, administrative, communication, analytical and problem-solving skills. Ability to supervise clinical training and teaching at undergraduate, postgraduate and fellowship levels. Knowledge in Critical care including provision of direct clinical care, supervision and mentoring of subordinates.
Duties :
The post requires the incumbent to provide a subspecialist service in the Critical Care Department. Overall governance, including clinical governance of the general critical care services.
Overall strategic and operational management of the adult critical care services of the hospital. Provision of high-quality critical care services at an academic hospital.
To ensure maintenance of standards of care and implementation of quality improvement programmes within the department. Monitor implementation and compliance with policies and procedures for intensive care services.
Ensure supervision and support of rotating registrars, sub-specialty trainees and trainees from allied and other services that the ICU cannot function without. In cooperation with the HOD, lead training and formal teaching in the department. Promote multidisciplinary approach to patient care.
Ensure efficient utilization of available resources in the Intensive care unit. To oversee and manage the integration of the pre-ICU patient management with the critical care unit to achieve and sustain acceptable waiting times in line with existing norms and standards for ICU.
To develop relationships with other academic ICUs and facilitate cooperation between the units. To conduct and promote critical care relevant research.
