    Head of Manufacturing (K-way)

    Job Description

    • The Head of Manufacturing is responsible for leading the manufacturing operations for K-Way, a technical apparel manufacturing company owned by the Cape Union Mart Group. K-Way has a legacy of world-class product quality, cost competitiveness, operational efficiency, scalability, and on-time delivery. This role oversees production planning, factory performance, sourcing coordination, quality assurance, compliance, process engineering, and continuous improvement across internal and external manufacturing partners.
    • The ideal candidate has deep apparel manufacturing expertise, employs a data driven management philosophy, has a strong knowledge of lean manufacturing principles and is well versed in leading change and building culture. The Head of Manufacturing works closely with Product Development, Design, Supply Chain, Sourcing, and Quality teams to deliver premium outdoor products that meet demanding performance and durability standards.

    Key Responsibilities

    Operational Management

    • Plan, organise, and manage the day-to-day operations of the factory to achieve delivery, production, quality, shipping, and cost targets.
    • Execute an operational strategy for all manufacturing departments, aligned with the strategic objectives of the business.
    • Oversee the execution of production plans, ensuring product profile, line efficiencies, and delivery conformance targets are met.
    • Monitor production activities, machine maintenance, and budgets to ensure optimal performance.
    • Ensure facilities, equipment, and tools are properly managed and maintained.
    • Lead quality assurance processes and drive continuous improvement initiatives across all functions.
    • Manage health and safety protocols, security, and compliance with company and legislative standards.
    • To oversee the upkeep and servicing of factory equipment, including sewing machines, overlockers, Gerbers etc.

    Financial & Strategic Management

    • Manage manufacturing budgets and cost structures to ensure efficient, cost-effective production processes.
    • Review and report on financial performance, productivity, and operational KPIs.
    • Identify areas for cost reduction and operational improvement.
    • Achieve financial and operational targets including production efficiencies, on-time delivery, quality, and profitability.
    • Support strategic planning and decision-making by providing data-driven insights and reports.

    People Leadership & Workforce Planning

    • Lead, develop, and mentor factory management and operational teams (+350 employees).
    • Drive a performance-based culture aligned to company values and objectives.
    • Oversee workforce planning, resourcing, and employee engagement.
    • Maintain staff morale, reduce absenteeism and lateness, and foster a safe and positive work environment.
    • Collaborate with HR and ER (Employee Relations) to manage employee relations, training, and development programmes.
    • Champion skills development, coaching, and succession planning within the manufacturing environment.

    Quality & Continuous Improvement

    • Ensure adherence to all quality control processes and customer delivery standards.
    • Oversee strict quality control to ensure garment specifications and standards match approved samples.
    • Drive Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, 5S, and Kaizen initiatives to improve operational excellence.
    • Embed continuous improvement methodologies and promote a culture of innovation.
    • Collaborate closely with design, buying, and planning teams to ensure seamless integration between manufacturing and retail requirements.

    Health, Safety & Wellbeing

    • Accountable for maintaining a safe working environment and ensuring compliance with occupational health and safety legislation.
    • Facilitate workplace well-being initiatives and employee safety programmes.
    • Manage relationships with Group Facilities, employee transport service providers, and other safety-related service partners.

    Knowledge, Experience & Qualifications Required

    • Matric with a relevant tertiary qualification in Production Management, Industrial Engineering, or equivalent.
    • 7–10 years’ experience in a Senior Manufacturing leadership role within a large clothing manufacturing or factory environment.
    • Proven track record managing a factory team of +350 employees.
    • Experience of managing external CMT (Cut, Make & Trim) and outworks (Embroidery, Laundry etc) is advantageous.
    • Strong understanding and practical experience with LEAN Manufacturing or Six Sigma.
    • Hands-on experience with modern MRP systems (Sync and Fast React system knowledge advantageous).
    • Proven understanding of garment construction, pattern grading, work study and manufacturing machinery.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel.
    • Strong knowledge of quality management systems and manufacturing cost control.
    • Demonstrated ability to lead a low-cost, high-quality, adaptive manufacturing operation.
