    Head of School 1.01

    Department Description        

    • The Faculty of Health Sciences invites applications for the position of Head of the School of Pathology to be appointed from within the existing staff of the School of Pathology.
    • The School of Pathology comprises seven Divisions, including Anatomical Pathology, Chemical Pathology, Immunology Human Genetics, Medical Microbiology, Haematology and Molecular Medicine, and Virology and Communicable Diseases. Only staff who are employed as joint staff are eligible to apply for this post.

    Brief Description        
    Responsibilities:

    • The Head of School will be responsible for providing leadership within the School, in conjunction with the Academic Heads of the Divisions and research units. This will involve the management of all academic activities inclusive of teaching and research, at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, student affairs and administrative matters within the School, including Human Resources, Financial Management and General Administration.
    • The Head of School will be responsible for the development and promotion of academic excellence within the constituent Divisions in order to maintain the school’s position of excellence and its diversity of interest and staff.
    • The successful applicant will report to the Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences and play a vital role in interfacing with the National Health Laboratory Service (NHLS), the Gauteng Department of Health and Hospital Management within the Wits Academic Complex.
    • The initial appointment is for a period of five years. After the first term, the Head of School may apply for a further five-year term of office. The successful applicant will be expected to continue with their existing professional and management responsibilities within the School.

    Qualifications and Experience:

    • Applicants’ qualifications must be registerable with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA). Current academic standing at the level of an Associated Professor, or being eligible for promotion to that level, is a minimum requirement.
    • As this is also a management role, the applicant must have excellent interpersonal, organisational and managerial skills and must have attained sufficient academic and professional standing to command the respect and confidence of members of the School.
    • The successful candidate’s academic credentials must meet the requirements of the Professoriate (minimum Associate Professor), as per the Faculty Staffing and Promotions criteria.
