    Junior Financial Accountant

    Job Description

    • FEM is looking to appoint a Junior Financial Accountant at its Head Office within the Corporate Finance Department based in Johannesburg. Reporting to the Finance Manager, the overall objective of this role is to execute the full spectrum of financial accounting responsibilities for the organisation, ensuring adherence to IFRS, internal controls, audit requirements, financial integrity, and organisational performance. The incumbent will play a key role in safeguarding the organisation's financial health through diligent reconciliations, reporting, and compliance with financial policies and procedures.

    The successful candidate's responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:

    • Maintaining the general ledger structure, chart of accounts, and reporting hierarchies.
    • Reviewing and approving journals, including accruals, prepayments, provisions, reallocations, and recurring entries.
    • Performing monthly balance sheet reconciliations and resolving reconciling items with appropriate audit trails.
    • Managing intercompany transactions, confirmations, and reconciliations.
    • Supporting month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes, including validating subsystem integrations and reviewing GL tie-outs.
    • Preparing financial statements in accordance with IFRS and company accounting policies.
    • Producing financial packs, disclosures, notes, and supporting schedules for internal and external stakeholders.
    • Preparing and submitting statutory financial reports and regulatory returns within prescribed deadlines.
    • Maintaining the fixed asset register, processing depreciation, and managing capital expenditure accounting.
    • Preparing audit schedules, working papers, reconciliations, and supporting audit processes.
    • Assisting with budgeting, forecasting, variance analysis, financial ratios, and scenario modelling.
    • Supporting finance policy maintenance, system upgrades, testing, process improvements, and automation initiatives.
    • Identifying control weaknesses and recommending process enhancements.
    • Providing guidance and support to junior finance resources where required.

    The minimum requirements of the position are a B.Com degree or equivalent qualification (NQF Level 7). A B.Com Honours degree (NQF Level 8) will be advantageous. Candidates must have a minimum of 3 years' financial accounting experience in a corporate environment, including strong IFRS knowledge and exposure to audit processes, together with at least 2 years' experience working with ERP platforms such as SAP, Oracle, Microsoft Dynamics, or Sage. Experience within the insurance sector, including investment accounting and IFRS 17, will be advantageous. Strong analytical ability, attention to detail, problem-solving skills, excellent communication, and the ability to work effectively under pressure and meet strict deadlines are essential requirements.
