    Junior Lecturer / Lecturer / Senior Lecturer (P001144)

    Job description

    PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

    • The NWU School of Music (Potchefstroom Campus) seeks to appoint one new academic staff member to assume teaching, research and creative work, and community engagement responsibilities

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Teaching and Learning

    • Accompany classical singers and instrumentalists.
    • Accompany CCM (Musical Theatre) singing students.
    • Accompany Jazz singers (recommendation).
    • Recruit students.
    • Write and amend study guides and devise new curricula.
    • Accompany one of the ensembles of the school in either opera or musical theatre.
    • Perform with students and staff at concerts.
    • Teach Collaborative Piano Pedagogy and other areas of interest.
    • Teach keyboard skills to non-piano majors.
    • Collaborate and build effective relationships for successful model delivery.

    Research

    • Provide supervision at the undergraduate and appropriate postgraduate level.
    • Research in any area of the discipline.
    • Contribute to the vision and mission of the ViAMUS research entity.
    • Administrative duties
    • Perform administrative tasks, including serving on committees.

    Minimum requirements

    JUNIOR LECTURER

    • An honours or four-year undergraduate (NQF Level 8) degree in Piano Performance or Collaborative Piano Studies.
    • A minimum of one (1) year specialist lecturing and research (including producing creative outputs) experience in Piano Performance or Collaborative Piano Studies at a higher education level.
    • Extensive experience as a collaborative pianist with the ability to accompany in both classical and musical theatre (CCM) genres.
    • Demonstrate the ability to supervise postgraduate students.

    LECTURER

    • A master's (NQF Level 9) degree in Piano Performance or Collaborative Piano Studies.
    • A minimum of two (2) years’ specialist lecturing and research (including producing creative outputs) experience in Piano Performance or Collaborative Piano Studies at a higher education level.
    • Research (including creative outputs) experience on a higher education level.
    • Evidence of significant experience as a collaborative pianist with the ability to accompany in both classical and musical theatre (CCM) genres.

    SENIOR LECTURER

    • A Doctorate (NQF Level 10) in Piano Performance or Collaborative Piano Studies.
    • A minimum of three (3) years’ specialist lecturing and research (including producing creative outputs) experience in Piano Performance or Collaborative Piano Studies at a higher education level.
    • Significant research (including creative outputs) experience at a higher education level.
    • Evidence of significant national and international experience as a collaborative pianist with the ability to accompany in both classical and musical theatre (CCM) genres.
    • Evidence of postgraduate supervision on the master’s levels.

    ADDED ADVANTAGES:

    • Significant experience in classical, musical theatre and jazz genres.
    • Experience as a repetiteur in opera and/or musical theatre.
    • Skills in improvisation.
    • Experience in ensemble work with instrumentalists.
    • Specialist knowledge in the accompaniment of art song/lieder.

    KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:

    • Professional knowledge of collaborative piano techniques, theories, teaching strategies, and research methodologies.
    • Knowledge of the repertoire, style and performance practice of piano accompaniment in various styles, including classical, opera, art song, jazz, and musical theatre.
    • The ability to diagnose and remedy technical and interpretative challenges among collaborative piano students.
    • The ability to recruit and retain excellent students.
    • Additional duties may be assigned commensurate with the candidate’s expertise.
    • Since the position involves staging productions during the evenings and performance/rehearsals over weekends, the incumbent must be willing to relocate to Potchefstroom.

    KEY BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES:

    • Excellent interpersonal skills.
    • The ability to work autonomously while working in a team environment.
    • Following instructions.
    • The ability to present own accurate and assertive research (including creative outputs) on a variety of public platforms (conferences, publications and performance events).
    • Demonstrate the ability to supervise postgraduate research.
    • The candidate can demonstrate the ability to supervise a master’s degree student to completion (Lecturer level).
