Junior Safety Officer at Murray & Roberts

Job description

The successful candidate will be responsible for, but not be limited to:

• Safely perform the duties of a junior safety officer and support the site safety team in line with regulations and M&RC’s standards, policies, procedures and safety protocols
• Monitor legal compliance, conduct safety inspections and facilitate risk assessments and audits underground, provide written feedback on findings / corrective actions
• Provide assistance with incident / accident investigations and reporting
• Assist with the implementation of safety initiatives on site
• Complete safety administrative tasks accurately and timeously including, completing logbooks, checklists / forms, incident registers, compiling reports, recording / analysing deviations/non-conformance, updating info on the risk management system etc.
• Effective engagement with supervisor, site team and external stakeholders to ensure smooth workflows
• Understand and comply with the Mine Health and Safety Act and M&RC’s standards, policies, procedures and safety protocols
• Proactive risk identification and mitigation, escalate and report timeously
• Effective self-management and alignment with M&RC’s values and leadership initiatives

Minimum requirements

Suitable candidates must possess the following minimum qualifications and skills:

• Grade 12 or NQF 4 equivalent [Maths and Science preferred]
• Relevant Safety related qualification / certificate
• COMSOC 1 or SAMSOC 1 [essential]
• COMSOC 2 or SAMSOC 2 [preferred]
• Proficient in MS Office [Word, Outlook, Excel]
• Valid EB Driver's License
• Medically fit for underground visits
• Numerical reasoning skills
• Planning and organising skills
• Administrative competence
• Ability and willingness to learn
• Good English written and verbal communication skills

Suitable candidates must have the following work experience:

• At least 2 years of experience in an underground / surface mining environment
• Knowledge and understanding of the Mine Health and Safety Act
