    Junior Scientist – Environmental Geoscientist

    Overall Job Purpose: To contribute towards geoscience projects in areas of environment, co-existence and sustainability in the field of geoscience and mining. Participate in project management and project implementation under guidance of more senior scientific staff.

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES 

    • Undertake moderate geoscience research which includes project management and project implementation under guidance of more senior scientific staff;
    • Conduct moderate geoscience research and conducts geoscience data collection, quality control, analyses and interpretation under guidance;
    • Compilation of geoscientific products under guidance of more senior scientific staff;
    • Compile reports on research findings in line with specific disciplines under the guidance of more senior scientific staff
    • Resolves simple to moderately complex problems in a variety of geoscientific fields in line with large parts of SOP/research methodologies under the guidance or supervision;
    • Participates in geoscientific statutory and occasionally commercial projects and publishes research findings internally and/or externally;
    • Auditing of existing geoscience data and gathering of new geoscience data;
    • Data processing and interpretation toward establishing solutions towards mandated research objectives;
    • Give inputs to the development of project proposals;
    • Implement tasks under guidance or supervision;
    • Manages work allocated to self
    • Conducts formal presentations of work outputs or scientific results through technical presentations internally and externally at conferences;
    • Gives limited scientific information and recommendation to the public and private sector organisations under and supervision of a senior staff;
    • Co-publishes research finding in peer-reviewed journals or internal publications
    • Gives inputs to the development of operating manuals for work procedures in line with scientific standards (i.e. ISO);
    • Checks the work done by self, interns and experiential learners before it is submitted to senior scientist;
    • Undertake the requisite individual learning and development in line with unit development plans;

    EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATION

    • Grade 12; and
    • BSc Honours Geology/Earth Sciences or MSc/M-tech Geology/ Earth Science
    • Candidate Natural Scientist (Cand.Sci.Nat.) or eligibility for registration with SACNASP
    • Drivers licence: Code 08
