Care and monitoring of farm and laboratory animals.
Managing the breeding of mice and rats.
Recognising controlled and notifiable diseases and zoonotic diseases and reporting them to the veterinarian.
Performing vaccination, deworming and parasite control of animals.
Administering medication via subcutaneous, intravenous, intramuscular, ocular and oral routes.
Collecting blood samples.
Conducting euthanasia of animals as required.
Performing postmortems in cases of death from unknown causes.
Collecting organs from carcasses.
Receiving and quarantining of animals.
Performing activities associated with managing research studies.
Providing necessary guidance regarding project planning including ethics applications.
Providing training on procedures to students, staff and researchers.
Collecting and transporting animals.
Procuring animal feed supplies and equipment.
Compiling and reviewing documents, standard operating procedures and protocols.
Ensuring compliance with relevant legislation and regulations.
Maintaining and operating equipment.
Cleaning and preparing equipment and animal cages.
Working on alternate weekends and public holidays.
Inherent Job requirements:
Relevant qualification as Laboratory Animal Technologist, Animal Health Technologist or Veterinary Nurse with experience in laboratory settings.
Registered with the South African Veterinary Council (SAVC) as Laboratory Animal Technologist, Animal Health Technologist or Veterinary Nurse (attach).
A minimum of three (3) years' experience in an animal research environment, performing procedures on animals, or in another relevant clinical environment registered with the SAVC.
A valid driver's licence (attach).
Recommendations:
Registered with South African Association for Laboratory Animal Science (SAALAS).
Experience in training of procedures on animals.
Experience in compiling and reviewing of standard operating procedures and related documents.
