    Lecturer (Permanent) / Junior Lecturer (5-year contract): Cinematography

    Job Purpose

    • To support the faculty and department in pursuit of its academic and research objectives which include to: teach according to a set syllabus; undertake research and innovation; contribute to curriculum development and design; engage in work integrated learning, and develop service learning activities.
    • To teach Film Technology and Design/Cinematography and Film Criticism in the Diploma in Film Production, manage Film Technology and Design specialisations in the Advanced Diploma in Film Production and co-ordinate student projects.

    Job Knowledge, Skills and Experience
    Minimum Requirements: Lecturer (Permanent):

    • A Master’s Degree in Film with a focus on cinematography practices
    • At least two (2) years’ relevant teaching experience in Higher Education

    Recommendations:

    • Substantive knowledge of and skills in sound recording and film aesthetics, film lighting and camera equipment.
    • Substantive experience of the standards and practices of the film industry with specific focus on cinematography.
    • Specialist knowledge of current film technology and professional nomenclature
    • Preference will be given to candidates with a Masters qualification in order to appoint at the Lecturer level

    Minimum Requirements: Junior Lecturer (5-year contract)

    • A BTech/Honours Degree or relevant PG Diploma in Film Production
    • Candidates must be registered or registerable for a relevant Masters Degree

    Recommendations:

    • Experiential understanding of the practice of cinematography or camera operating based on engagement in professional productions.
    • Knowledge of and skills in sound design and film aesthetics, videography/first assistant cameraperson/focus puller
    • Experiential understanding of the standards and practices of the film industry and of current film technology and professional nomenclature
    • The appointment at Junior Lecturer level is a 5-year contract subject to completion of Master’s degree qualification within this period. Upon completion of the Masters qualification, conversion to permanent and at Lecturer level will be subject to institutional governance for approval.

    Key Performance Areas / Principal Accountabilities

    • Teach cinematography, sound design, film aesthetics and film criticism, to the Advanced Diploma level
    • Participate in curriculum development
    • Perform appropriate academic and administrative duties (including the effective Management of Marks Administration)
    • Substantive contribution to the co-ordination of student projects and productions in relation to cinematography, sound and aesthetics
    • Participate in the Quality Assurance activities of the Department
    • Participate in research
    • Contribute to community initiatives by integrating community interventions into curriculum.
    • Develop and maintain linkages with industry and professional bodies on co-operative education, new techniques/technologies, and research projects
    • Management of the Film Programme’s film production equipment, and contribution to the upkeeping and upgrading of facilities on an ongoing basis
    • Assist with marketing and recruitment activities
    • Perform other functions as may be assigned by the Head of Department
