The Master Installation Electrician is a person who has been registered as a Master Installation Electrician in terms of regulation 9 and who has been approved by the Chief Inspector for the verification and certification of the construction, testing and inspection of any electrical installation for efficient and effective custody, transfer and transport of petroleum products in liaison with Operations, Instrumentation and Mechanical departments in Transnet Pipelines.
The Master Installation Electrician is responsible for electrical scheduling, inspection and to ensure safe working conditions.
Position Outputs
Managing of COC’s (Certificate of compliance) a. Undertake periodic inspections and issuing COC’s as per National Codes and OSH Act b. Conduct 2Y compulsory OHSact Hazardous area equipment inspections. c. Maintain depot COC’s and compliance of Electrical Equipment housed in Hazardous areas.
Give guidance and oversee Electrical Installations
Control the integrity of EquipmentEnsure the correct application of the correct Electrical equipment in the Plant/operations
PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE To perform preventative maintenance tasks on electrical equipment by detecting, repairing and reporting minor defects as well as reporting major defects thereby ensuring reliable equipment for the continuous operation of the pipeline e.g. 220V-3.3 Kv motors, control gear and trip protection equipment e.g Actuators
DEFECT REPAIR Identify, analyse and repair defects on installed (live) equipment. Repair specific installed (live) equipment by performing diagnostic tests to identify defects and effect repairs. Reading and understanding schematics and reports are essential e.g. Mainline motor starter and trip protection, 380V panel starters and trip protection.
BONDING Witness and install
REMOVE AND REPLACE INSTALLED (LIVE) EQUIPMENTRemoval and replacement of specific equipment by planning the complete installation, isolation and removal of the equipment as well as preparing and installing the replacement, energising and testing the operations of the equipment e.g. Main motors, Actuators, lights, cranes, enclosures, isolators and stop/start stations.
REFURBISHMENT AND MODIFICATION ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT Refurbishing equipment by disassembling the equipment, replacing defective parts, reassembling and testing the equipment to the manufacturers specification e.g. Starters Actuators Certify all refurbished Equipment
HIGH VOLTAGE EQUIPMENT Obtaining authorisation and undertaking switching (A-Brown) and earthing on high voltage switchgear and equipment up to 132KV, issuing of work and test permits as well as undertaking maintenance of the above equipment. Also supervise unathorised personnel in substations and HT yards Work to a clearance of live high voltage equipment as per electrical HIGH VOLTAGE instructions
SAFETY Attend Meetings Do Safety Inspections Use of safety equipment Ensure compliance of Equipment for flameproof safety and standards Assist with Job Observations and Supervision of personnel
ADMIN The effective control of administration duties which includes:- Reports (defect, inspection) Obtain and cancel hot work permits (Electrical) Job cards Operate SAP Modules (MM & IM) Maintain records, registers and COC’s as per applicable legislation Assist with internal electrical audits. Assist with Acting as an Electrical Supervisor as and when required.
Qualifications and Experience
Essential Requirements Trade Test Electrical (3 years) with 3 years Technical/Electrical on the Job experience. Must have adequate knowledge of all electrical equipment on Transnet Pipelines to be able to function on his/her own. The following courses must be passed with practical on the job experience during the three years’ experience in Transnet Pipelines. Obtain qualification and accreditation to qualify for a Master Installation Electrician Register at the Department of Labour as a Master Installation Electrician and complete 2 years on the Job Training and exposure and obtain final Accreditation. Computer literate SAP Course in Plant Maintenance (MM & IM Modules). Purchasing and Inventory, Word Excel, etc. High Voltage safety instructions (A-Brown) Thereafter a person has to get practical experience (training) on depots in the region until passed out. He/she has to attend a refresher course every two years and get tested and recertified every two years. NOSA (Safety) course Fire Fighting Oil spill course First Aid Level 2 Rotork actuator course on A-Range, IQT and IQ-Range Electrical motor course Transformer (HT) course Working in confined spaces Crossings and Cathodic Protection course ( Basic course) Theory: Operations Course: Thereafter a person has to get practical experience (training) on the depot where based until passes out on depot/manifold(s) Knowledge of testing instruments i.e. Megger, Thumper etc Code 8 driver’s licence Wireman’s licence Explosion Protection for Plant Maintenance Technicians(electrical and instrumentation)
