    Medical Officer Anaesthesia: Anaesthesia (Pholosong Regional Hospital)

    Requirements :

    • Requirements: Senior/National Senior Certificate (Grade 12) and Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery. Diploma in Anaesthesia DA(SA) will be an added advantage.
    • HPCSA registration as an independent Medical Practitioner. Proof of current registration with HPCSA (2026/2027). Proof of Current registration and registration certificate with HPCSA (2026/2027).
    • Current training in PALS, ACLS and POCUS will serve as an added advantage. The applicant must be competent in Pediatric Anaesthesia, Neurosurgical Anaesthesia, Thoracic Anaesthesiaand care of the critically ill patient. The Applicant must be able to participate in commuted overtime.

    Inherent requirements of the job: Participate in the after-hours call system (Commuted overtime is compulsory Option D)

    Duties :

    • Provide safe, effective and evidence-based anaesthetic care to patients undergoing surgical, obstetric, diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Conduct pre-anaesthetic assessments, identify perioperative risks, optimise patients before surgery and formulate appropriate anaesthetic plans in consultation with senior clinicians. Administer general, regional and local anaesthesia, provide procedural sedation and ensure continuous intraoperative monitoring in accordance with approved clinical protocols and professional standards.
    • Participate in the management of difficult airways, perioperative emergencies, resuscitation, trauma cases and critically ill patients, including after-hours and on-call services. Provide postoperative care, pain management and appropriate handover to recovery room, ward, high-care or intensive care teams.
    • Maintain accurate, complete and confidential clinical records, anaesthetic charts, consent documentation and medico-legal reports. Participate in clinical governance activities, including morbidity and mortality meetings, audits, quality improvement initiatives, infection prevention and control, patient safety programmes and adverse event reporting.
    • Ensure the safe use, checking and availability of anaesthetic equipment, medicines, controlled substances and consumables, and promptly report equipment faults or stock shortages.
    • Comply with hospital policies, HPCSA requirements, the National Core Standards, occupational health and safety requirements and relevant legislation. Participate in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, supervision of junior staff, continuous professional development, research and multidisciplinary teamwork to improve perioperative outcomes and service delivery.
